DaneJasper posted : This is also tough to answer because it varies by service. For example, POP session logs are not retained for very long, because they're huge.

DHCP allocation information is also pretty large, and while it sticks around longer, it's not a very long time currently, looks like currently a few months.

At the moment, to give as precise and honest an answer as possible, it would be "from 72 hours to a couple years". The duration would depend upon the specific log and service (for example POP vs. SMTP, DHCP vs. static IP, VPN, etc.) Obviously, the static IP allocations are the ones that we'd have information on the longest.

Finally, as John says, you shouldn't plan to engage in illegal acts on the basis of anticipated expiration of logs. And, you should count on Sonic.net to strongly defend your privacy, we will not provide information without reasonable cause and a totally properly executed court order.

BTW in case of a civil suit discovery, we would always notify our customer promptly, prior to any response to a subpoena, in order to give the customer an opportunity to seek counsel and anonymously obtain a gag if it's possible from the court.

-Dane

burrowowl posted :
said by slovokia_anon :

My question was simple and precise - I'd like a simple precise answer if possible. For example "Sonic maintains DHCP assignment information for a total of X months - beyond that time it is no longer possible to map IP addresses to customer identity information".
That is about the size of it. There are several ways I could address this question that could have unintended consequences. For example, my previous reply apparently made me look evasive and secretive, though that was not my intent.

Lease information retention times are subject to changes based on a variety of factors, so making a very specific public statement could give the false impression that our retention times today are the same they were a year ago or a year in the future.

One day's DHCP logs, gzipped down to save on disk space, is a little over 600MB (from a couple of random files I just checked), and that adds up over time. Disk space is cheap these days, but we have better things to use it for than remembering the MAC address of some Linksys from a 5-minute lease a year ago.

Generally speaking, one should not assume that simply because time has passed that the IP address associated with a connection has been forgotten, and changing IP addresses should not be seen as a meaningful security or privacy measure. Similarly we do not want to give the impression that a customer can rely on us being able to produce very stale lease information for whatever legitimate purposes they may have; we may have done some housecleaning and deleted those data.

Customers and third parties can, however, expect us to abide by our privacy policy, which we have no intention of loosening or bending. Sharing private customer information for commercial or other reasons is something that is rather offensive to us.

--
John Fitzgerald
Sonic.net Technical Support
