1 edit | Support blamed everything but SPRINT
I just got off the phone with Sprint and installed a new modem (598U). I was complaining about my speeds being so slow. Tech Support blamed everything but SPRINT. I was told it was because I was too far from the tower, now mind you I have a beam and a signal level of 100% @ -69-73dbm. I was also told the cookies in my computer caused it, then when I emptied the cookies with the same results, I then was told it was because my computer was old! I have a new three week old computer. Also she said it could be the weather...hmmmm
"I think the problem is from the tower is overloaded" I told her and she said that it doesn't show that it was. Is there any way they can look at a screen and tell me that? (I don't think so). I wish I had stayed with Wildblue Satellite.
All I can say is when DSL ever comes out here its goodbye SPRINT.

Looks like you are on a one T-1 tower and two of you are on it. I see it on mine. Divide 1.2MB by number of users. Nobody else on mine right now.
This is the speed when one more gets on. 1.2 divided by 2 equals 0.60. This one is steady downloading. Note up not effected.

| Not exactly how it works Jack. The bandwidth is constantly being renewed. If it worked as you state, four people could make it zero.
CDMA allows a constant stream / renewal of bandwidth when any modem accessing the tower is in a dormant state. It is when you have someone doing P2P or downloading huge files that affects the tower the most. You won't get to a point where you have zero, but your speed will definitely suffer when those activities are in play. -- ... need help? »evdo-tips.com/ |

| reply to W4DRA Thing is Jim, when more than one person is on a T1 line it gets lower regardless. Depends on how the other persons are using their link. Renewal of bandwidth on a single T1 is limited. If more than 1 person is on it, you won't get fuil bandwidth no matter what. -- Windows XP Pro SP3 / Windows 7 64bit RC|AMD Phenom X3 8650|Asus M3N72-D Motherboard|4GB Patriot PC2-8500 1066MHz RAM|EVGA GeForce GTS 250 1GB Ram Superclock Edition |

| reply to Jim_in_VA I agree Jim, but I wasn't talking about the casual browser and email users. I don't think browsing effects it too much. The Youtube, movie downloads, video clips etc are bandwidth killers. I've seen mine as low as 300 constant with 400+ up so that indicates somebody is steady downloading. If two users on a T-1 are steady downloading and if it's divided equally then it's 600 each and there is no way to renew bandwidth because it's all being utilized. I see this quite often now as at least one more user is hitting my tower on a regular basis. |

Renewal of bandwidth on a single T1 is limited. If more than 1 person is on it, you won't get fuil bandwidth no matter what. What I think after months of watching and trying to interpret my speed test results is when I'm the only one on normal is 1.2 +/- down and 400 up. When someone else is on possibly just browsing my speeds both down and up will drop slightly (800 down and 200 up). I think when the other user is steady downloading my speed drops to around 600 down but the up goes back up to the normal range as downloading steady does not impact up that much.
Below is my result from early this morning when I don't think anyone else is on. I'll post results later as others get on.

| reply to dMarks You know...I reread what I wrote and for the life of me I am not even sure what I was trying to say...lol.
Eh, perhaps I drank a bit much last night. I usually try staying away from computers when I do that though. -- Windows XP Pro SP3 / Windows 7 64bit RC|AMD Phenom X3 8650|Asus M3N72-D Motherboard|4GB Patriot PC2-8500 1066MHz RAM|EVGA GeForce GTS 250 1GB Ram Superclock Edition |

| reply to W4DRA Not sure if I have a single T1 to my tower or not. This is what I usually get on a speed test (sometimes higher) :

| i cant stand Sprint support. they have some of the worst trained people in support. i got transferred to their highest level of tech support and she had a tough time figuring out what a static ip address was and why i wanted a static ip address. not only that, but 99% of the time i call in, they NEVER believe me that my broadband device does NOT require a connection manager. they always tell me that if i dont have the connection manager running on my computer, i cant connect to the internet....amazing. |

| reply to W4DRA Dumb question: how are MBB speeds affected by cellphone users connected to my tower? I would think a cellphone user making a voice call would use a whole lot less bandwidth than a MBB user downloading something, but can someone clarify this? -- Sierra 598U/Cradlepoint CTR500, grid antenna, Millenicom unlimited, 4 XPPro and 1 Ubuntu units, FireFox everywhere. |
