Free WIFI

Not sure what the right forum is for this, but since it's part of my FIOS account, I'll post it here...

Just got done signing up for the free WIFI offered as part of FIOS. Looks like it covers all the same hotspots where I previously used AT&T; Starbucks is well represented.

It makes you install proprietary software as part of the sign-up... anyone knows if that is required to actually use the service?

What a freaking joke, requires XP or Vista? Not compatible with OS X.

I am so over Vz shutting Mac users out (Media Manager only in beta form, Call Assistant).

Doesn't work on Windows 7 either. That's really annoying that the username/password combination can't just be entered into a portal page when first accessing the wireless hotspot.

That sucks. My work laptop comes with it's own WIFI client which I'm required to use. Not sure how that client is going to play with the VZ one.

I have figured out a workaround to get the software to install on Windows 7 but cannot create username/password.

If you use compatibility mode on Windows 7 to fool the Browser to run in Vista Compatibility and will download the setup software.

Then when the software tries to run and says you aren't using compatible OS and close it, it create a resume setup icon on the desktop. Run that in compatibility mode I can get to the screen to create a username and password but cannot get past that.

I installed it in VirtualBox on my Mac. I will try it out next week at the airport to see if I can connect using that and then use my Mac programs to browse the web or if I will be stuck using the Windows apps.

This software has to be close to the worst code ever written. It caused numerous stalls, errors etc. I promptly removed it.

I have never, ever used any Verizon written and/or supplied software which wasn't almost unusable with the exception of the code which ran my old DSL box. They make Windows, at it's worst, look great. Who writes this stuff and do they ever check to see if it works?

As pointed out above, it requires Vista or XP, therefore no, it won't work on an iPhone or any cell phone.:

try www.verizon.net/wifi or logon to your account and look for downloads. You have to be on the 20mbs plan or higher. Part of the setup creates a separate user login. At first that seems counter intuitive, but my wife and college bound daughter also have laptops and the WIFI login can be shared (up to 4 simultaneous users per the FAQ)

What I found strange is that it shows the Honda dealer here, which does have WIFI, but it is free anyway, you just get the daily access code when you are there. Maybe this would allow you to skip that step, who knows.

Well it doesn't work with my 768k dsl.
I'm not really surprising since I'm only paying like $14.99 for it.

Who qualifies for Verizon Wi-Fi? Both new and current Verizon High Speed Internet users who subscribe to a plan with download speeds up to 3 Mbps or higher qualify for Verizon Wi-Fi service.

If you don't qualify for Verizon Wi-Fi, you may want to upgrade the speed of your High Speed Internet service to provide faster downloads, as well as to take advantage of the Verizon Wi-Fi service.

This comes up on this page »www.verizon.com/wi-fi when you click on the word qualified.

I had free wifi with att dsl.
I used when traveling all the time. Many airports had att wifi, mcdonalds (I would stop there to use the internet), and some hotels allowed free access with the att wifi.

It was a nice benefit.

Yeah driving up from NC the other week I noticed Micky D's also had free att wireless.

This Verizon wireless will be good to have on the laptop as well, and at any time I can just tether the iphone to the laptop anyway. Its faster and literally plug and plug.
