Kernel Update Broke NVIDIA Drivers ::FIXED!::

Arrrrgh! I'm used to having to recompile the module whenever a kernel update is done, but the latest from OpenSUSE BROKE the NVIDIA my installation, and I'm going nutso trying to fix it.
Read and posted at the NVIDIA forums and the OpenSUSE forums to no avail.
Seems I'm not alone......

Re: Kernel Update Broke NVIDIA Drivers

Installed the 32bit PAE kernel update and re-compiled Nvidia 185.18.14 driver against kernel-source with no problems. Been running fine for four days on 11.1/KDE3.5.10. What issues are you having?

It won't load the driver. I'm stuck in framebuffer graphics.
Using the same driver you are, OpenSUSE 11.1, XFX 9400GT PCIE.
Worked *perfectly* until the latest kernel update from OpenSUSE.

OK. I know that you've done this before but here are a few things that I do, maybe something will help you:

· Install matching kernel-source.
· Make 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run' executable.
· On my AMD box I switch to using the nv drivers in xorg.conf before installing nvidia's drivers.
· Normally /tmp is nodev, nosuid, noexec in fstab. Need to temporarily allow exec to install nvidia drivers.
· If you've previously installed the repo nvidia drivers be sure that the packages are uninstalled.
· Drop into init 3 and login, then su to root and do:
#rmmod nvidia
#cd [location of nvidia drivers]
#sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run -q
(installation should commence)
#sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit not a letter!, then configure if needed)
#init 5 (or restart)
Sound about right to you?

Try uninstalling the Microsoft kernel components?

I have the kernel sources, and the kernel symbols, on that box because I compile a lot of stuff, so all the prerequisites are there.
The only thing I've never done is to UNinstall the drivers from the repo....it's never caused a problem before.
The "-m" option in the sax2 command causes it to not work right, so I had to go to just "sax2 -r 0=nvidia".
I'll switch to the nv drivers, nuke the repo drivers, and try it again tonight when I get home.

You do realize that there are no fewer than 3 different Nvidia drivers in the Repo depending on your model card don't you?

Also the exact models supported are poorly documented and sometimes the only solution is trial and error to find out which one works for your particular card...

Been using SuSE and Open SUSE for 10 years now.
Yes, I'm very familiar with what cards are/aren't supported by each one of the drivers in the repo.
NVidia has a good FAQ stating as much....

Just occurred to me, before attempting reinstallation insure that the Nvidia repo itself is disabled or deleted in YaST to prevent an unintended RPM install from the repo. You may also want to check /lib/modules to be sure that all old Nvidia driver files were successfully uninstalled.

And use a clean driver download file from Nvidia in case the last one was somehow corrupted.

Removed NVidia from the repo; set the driver to "nv"; renamed the nvidia modules; downloaded the driver again; switched to "init 3" and ran the script.
Rebooted, and now it works.
Guess I had a major conflict with the repo drivers.
Thanks for the help!!
