If true, we have bigger problems...

How is the legality of hacking your phone's OS going to prevent tower software from being attacked and "crashed"?

The iPhone has already been hacked and the threat is already real. I'm quite certain it would be very illegal to crash the cell towers by using a DDoS or other "nefarious" mechanism. The only difference would be prosecuting someone for hacking their phone AND attacking the cell phone network.

If Apple's excuse has credibility, I would be more concerned with how fragile the tower software is rather than worrying over the legality of hacking your phone's OS.
