Re: [Scam] Supportonclick.com scareware scam

Now, that is intimidating. Though I do not have important info lying here and there but its just that I watched them work on my comp.

So I know exactly where they went. I just saw them cleaning the registry and then uninstall the existing antivirus and replace it with a new McAfee.

Interesting,
Are you sure that it was the same entity discussed in the thread. Who contacted who first?. Did the clean the registry with a tool, or did they edit it manually. How did you pay them, and how much.?

But don't you find it odd that someone you do not know, just called you out of the blue and told you that you allegedly had a problem with your computer?

If you know that they did exactly what they were suppose to do, why didn't you do it yourself since you would have to have the knowledge? See the point?

You really have no idea what they could have taken or installed.

No. I did not pay them. They said its a trial period. If I am satisfied with their services I could register. In that case i would have to pay a nominal charge.

That's great that you found a free service that your happy with.
You're doing the right thing, spreading the word about a service that is worthwhile.
Where & how do you register?

That scenario is not their normal modus operandi, at least according to numerous reports posted here: »800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-212-796-4064 They usually insist on registration & payment up front.

Several posters report that they claimed to be a Microsoft partner, however they do not state that on their website.

It is difficult to find any mainstream media articles about them, since most of the articles are their own press releases.

Thats the site they mentioned. But they have registration charges. Their services seem to be fine apart from the heavily Indian accent. Atleast in my case, the antivirus issue WAS resolved.

They are also calling homes in the UK and Australia, here are some comments from there circa August of 1998. So far, you appear to be the only individual who has received pro bono service.

quote:
Jeff - 19 Aug 2008
Just had a call from this guy! What a giggle!

Told me he'd been asked to call from my ISP's support dept because I had problems on my PC. Suspecting something fishy:
Me: Who's my ISP then?
Guy: Either Virgin, Sky or BT
Me: Well, which is it?

He couldn't tell me, so I got into a discussion about how I was software developer and if I had a problem with my PC I think I'd know about it.

Whenever I asked him a question he couldn't answer he just went back to the original statement that he was calling from the ISP's support dept.

The thing to do with any of these things is just to keep asking them questions - "What do you mean?" is a great one to ask about five times if you've got the time!

Teagenie - 21 Aug 2008

Received call from indian sounding guy.Something wrong with my computer, slow to start up.As it was thought he knew what he was doing,so paid a quarterly payment.Had call today 21 08 2008 again same thing ,slow running so log on to www.supportonclick.co.uk,eventually going to subscription page and then to pay an annual payment of £43-00p.Told him i paid payment in June he said now annaul payment due.didnt feel safe so told him i would contact them later.Had about 4 calls after that from different guys one after the other.Iasked for phone number.A bit hesitant but gave me this number 1274900834.I wont phone it.I think ive been had.

Call received in Adelaide Australia - 5 Sep 2008

FYI - Received a call today on my home phone (landline) at 7:20pm local time here in Adelaide South Australia. Caller (Indian accent, no name) and script sounding much the same as those desribed previously - he said he was ringing from "Support On Click" and claiming my "local ISP" had provided them with a report that my PC was "running slowly" and that it was a "computer technical issue". I asked where he had got my phone number and details from - he repeatedly said my number (and the report about my PC running slow) was from "my local ISP" though he never named that ISP. I think this is very improbable as my ISP has a very good name and their website says nothing about this purported service provider. The caller kept returning to the same "scripted" phrases during the call but also became rather garbled as he went on to say that the problems they could help me with "might nver happen"! A Google search indicates a website exists for this company (along with other search results from rather improbably looking "news sites") but I would be very cautious.
Caller: Suport On Click (or SupportOnClick)
Caller Type: Telemarketer

From the 800 notes linked above

WOW! Thats the site they mentioned.
You are not even sure of who you allowed access to your computer? Bad move.
Here's the best possible advice in your situation.
Bring your computer into a local computer repair shop & have it examined for viruses, trojans, backdoors, rootkits etc...
Post an image of your receipt in this thread for the amount the local computer repair shop charged to remove the offending files (remove any of your personally identifiable info first) as a warning to anyone else that might fall victim to this scam.
It's victims such as yourself that this forum is out to protect & educate.
Mahalo for sharing. Good move.

Was out of town this week end. Sorry for the late reply. Honestly, they had called me once. Was in a meeting and hung up on them. They send an email and i really found it weird that they are getting my numbers and IDs. I called up the number to know.

A girl named Natalie explained that it is PC support company. I checked their site and asked how do i know they are not a scam. She said they can provide trial services before i sign up with them.

The rest is what I posted. My point is till now I have not faced any damage. Thats why I am not not calling it a scam. But yes, the heavy Indian accent is true. they are located in Calcutta.

Aah, OK, I thought you posted here to ask if »www.supportonclick.com were a scam, not to call it not a scam.

I am nervous because i have received a call from them and let them handle my antivirus issue. They have solved the problem. Have I been scammed? They have not taken money as yet and said I am on trial period
I suppose you can ask if »www.supportonclick.com is a scam & at the same time call it not a scam because you don't know if it's a scam or not a scam or a ham or a pan courtesy to Dr Suess but if your not willing to take the advice given to you that it is a scam them why bother to bother the brother about scams & the hams at »www.supportonclick.com?

Not at all. You are the one that's confused or a shill.

YOU came here asking if this was as scam BUT had decided already that it is not. This is what doesn't make sense to anyone here.

This IS a scam. It is proven. For some reason, when you are given the advice that there is more going on, you vehemently defend the scammers. Why? None of your story makes sense.

You say they didn't do anything to the computer that was bad, but how do you know? You clearly aren't smart enough to know or you would have cleared it out yourself.

That's why we are waiting for answers to the real questions that have been asked.

Have you ever called your ISP to see if they really contacted someone else in a foreign country - but not the US even there are companies here like McAfee and Norton - to call you out of nowhere?

The antivirus antispyware folks have now started advertising on the local NYC radio stations.

I think we can be pretty sure of their scam status.

Kind of like how Ascentive has been advertising finallyfast.com on TV. And both sites seem to operate in a similar manner, through scareware.

But supportonclick.com gets a lower Web Of Trust rating than even finallyfast.com, with Reputation Ratings no better than 5. In fact, the HP Hosts blog called them out as a telephone scam abusing Malwarebytes' name: »hphosts.blogspot.com/2009/03/sup···-by.html

The site is in HP Hosts.

i agree with laura as i had my PC problem solved by a ht tp://supportonclick.com technician. my PC was running like a snail and as i opted for the service that they offered the technician took control of my PC and made it pretty fast. awesome!
we, working people don't have enough time to bother about regular PC problems. so why not resort to a company who take immense care about each and every PC problem? there are many companies out there who provide remote online support but i personally was helped by this supportonclick technician named George, i still remember. so i don't think they are a scam.
anyways, opinions differ. i only place my one.

Oh come on, you just posted that you were unable to install Windows 7 and had to get the brand new Operating System configured to install it, now all of a sudden it was also slow as molasses and supportonscamclick helped you fix that after supportonscamclick magically configured Windows 7 to install on your PC? I have never heard of an OS needing configuration before installation. I don't think that is humanly possible. It sounds like they installed rootkits and malware on your system. Hi Morris Watson, can I call you Morris?. That is a very WASPy name for someone whose native language does not appear to be English. Are you by chance posting from HQ?. It is not cool to post without a disclaimer.

So how did you first make contact with them. Did they find you, or did you find them?. How much did they charge you?.

i suppose you have little knowledge about computers. i meant to say there are certain system requirements for installing Windows 7. thats what i didn't know and got enlightened with the info provided by the technician. another thing is i had just tried to share two different experiences of mine. plz don't mess up these two. once my PC was running really slow. i followed their suggestions and it was accelerated and the other one is the Windows 7 installation issue that i discussed.

and for your kind information, i don't know who this laura is. i didnt even know her name until you mentioned her name and i visited her profile to check whether i am right. did you check her account status? she hasn't visited the forum atleast for six weeks!!!!!!!

i really got help for my computer from supportonclick technicians in the past and hope to get so in future too. i have a lot more to say about them because »supportonclick.com technicians were really helpful to me. andd i dont fear to share my credit card info with anyone who will give me a quality service.

byeeeee...
