| [General] Help request: Downloads break DSL connection
Installation is a small LAN, D-Link router, Arescom modem bridge. Earthlink DSL provisioned by ATT (or possibly Covad). Generally well behaved for 8+ years now. Uploads per DSLReports tools clock at 400+kbps. The line is provisioned for 3.0mbps download. ATT tech checked the line from inside the building and pronounced it clean, also no errors reported down at the Central Office.
Starting about 7/19 (immediately after EL scheduled maintenance in Houston area), DSL got whacked but ONLY for downloads. Uploads, normal browsing, email all seem to work just fine.
However with a download (examples: software update, DSLReports test tools, other public downloads just to try various sources) the download makes it to 3%, 50%, whatever and then the DSL connection is completely broken. Can't ping earthlink.net from any computer on the LAN. The LAN itself is fine. 60-180 seconds later, the DSL connection is restored but of course by then the download is hosed. Rinse and repeat.
Any help would be appreciated. (EL tech support has been useless.) |

1 edit | Are you saying that the DSL LED is going out? If yes, that is sync loss and you would need to post your DSL Stats.
If the DSL LED isn't going out, then I'd suggest testing with the Router out of the way using one PC with only the Modem.
Also, did you ever check the power supply for the recall in 2002?

| Yes, the we replaced the power supply in the recall.
Current example: download of Open Office. Got to 3% complete and then loss of connection. Could not ping earthlink.net, google.com. In about 30 seconds the connection was restored.
Modem LEDS: Arescom has WAN/Link and WAN/activity. The Link light stayed solid green the whole time. The Activity light went from solid amber when the download was running to mostly off when it stopped, very infrequent flashes.
This is a 2001 model Arescom from Earthlink and I can't get to the modem itself. Existing verions of the NetDSL tool that I could find will not even install under WinXP. |

I did try the direct connection to modem, unplugging all phone lines, power cycles of everything. Same behavior. |

| You have to set your Ethernet Card to a Static IP to use the Software or Telnet with the Arescom.

You want the full DSL Stats, I don't know what menu it is under, but the data that you are looking for is the Upstream and Downstream Sync Rate/Connect Rate in Kbps or Bps along with the Attenuation in dB and the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) in dB again both Upstream and Downstream values.
You might try System, Profile and then Interface menus.

join:2009-07-31 Houston, TX | Frustration here. I played with every command/subcommand in the modem help menu and I can't get anything useful (SNR, Sync rates, etc). I can't even find static config params like VPI/VCI.
Does anyone have a technical manual? |

You can try the NetDSL Manager software above, but it only shows the DSL Sync Rates. Another option would be to buy a Modem off of eBay. The ZyXEL P660R is what Earthlink uses now and it shows all the stats needed and is a better Modem plus includes a Router. There are three numbers that you can search for to get a bargain.
* Zyxel P-660R-ELNK - Router * Zyxel P-660R-D1 - Router * Zyxel P-660R-61 - Router

| Thanks again, Doc.
The NetDSL Manager download unzipped but setup.exe failed to install looking for a Hard Lock device driver. Looking around the web, I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem under XP.
I've held off buying a new modem because the problem started concurrently with EL maintenance. Also both EL Tech Support (really, that's what they call it!) and the ATT tech who came on site (seemed to know his stuff) both said there is no technical reason to upgrade the modem.
I'll be back tomorrow. |

| reply to docdan Ran one last round of tests today with a computer direct connected to the modem...... Small downloads (10mb?) seem to work. Larger downloads (50-100mb) lose the connection along the way, sometimes almost immediately. Various speed tests that use smallish file sizes show a consistent 1650/420kbps. Supposedly the line is provisioned for 3.0/768. Speed tests that use larger file sizes lose the connection.
With the normal LAN router setup..... I can look at the router log for PPPoE disconnect/reconnect. (Router is set for auto reconnect.) Now do a large download, lose the connection, can't even ping outside the LAN. Connection comes back 30-180 seconds later with no PPPoE event in the router log.
I'm about to cave and buy the overpriced Innoband router/modem unit from Earthlink so it's all on them. |

| Based on your Download speed you are not connected at 3.0 and are syncing at a lot lower than the 3.0 Rate.
1650 Kbps Down would be around 1900 Kbps to 2000 Kbps Sync Rate meaning that either the Modem is having problems or the line is having problems. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

Freezes that happen roughly every 15 Minutes? No PPPoE loss in logs or seen anywhere? Does the WAN IP address remain the same? Do you have multiple Ethernet Cards?

I don't know about buying the Innoband, you have been a customer long enough to get a free ZyXEL P660R Modem if you want and just pay shipping and handling of $19.95 (don't get overnight, just ground service) by complaining that you are not getting full speed and your line has been tested so that leaves the Modem going flaky in its old age.

| The "freezes" are not at regular intervals. I can create a connection drop at any time by launching a large download (say >20mb). But it's not like it drops after a set time or mb's. Example: the Open Office install package, 100mb, sometimes it drops at less than 1mb, other times I get to 80mb.
In the most recent case (iTunes update 79mb), the connection dropped at 6.5mb, the connection came back (checking with ping earthlink.net) in about 60 seconds. The router showed no PPPoE events, and the same WAN IP address.
All of the computers on this LAN have a single Ethernet card.
To recap, this mess started with EL scheduled maintenance which I now suspect moved me from Covad to ATT. |

The same is here. It is started for me on July 13, except that I am located in Los Angeles. Of course "GREAT INDIAN SUPPORT" team is next to useless. Since I am using WRT610N sysco router my solution is:log on to router, go to status and when DSL disconnects, I immediately punch disconnect button and right away punch connect. My downloads resume untill next disconnect. |

| Here's the conclusion to my story.
1. EL maintenance done the weekend of 7/19 stepped my line up to 3mbps with no notification. Premise is 11,500 ft from CO which, according to dispatched ATT tech, is too far for 3mbps. Even in safe mode (2mbps) the ancient Arescom modem was marginal at holding the connection, at least at some level. I never did see a loss of sync LED.
2. Got a new D-Link DSL-2640B router/modem and all is well at 2mbps.
3. Doc Olds had asked earlier and now I can answer, from the D-Link: SNR U/D 17/16 Attenuation 47/30 Output Power (dBm) 10.4/8.1
My next quest is to figure out how to make the D-Link non-pingable (block ICMP ping). |
