 | Can I avoid Frontier's $3.99 modem rental fee? I know this question has been addressed before, so I'll apologize in advance for asking it again. Other threads discussing this issue are contradictory, so I'm wondering if Frontier's policy has recently changed. I've asked a couple of Frontier customer service reps and received different answers.
I currently have a Slipstream 6520 modem/router which works fine, but costs $3.99/month. As I understand it, the best solution for me would be to purchase a wireless router, return the 6520 to Frontier and ask them to provide me with a hardwired modem free of charge. I live in Rochester, New York. Has anyone successfully done this?
Also, coming off a two year contract, I'm told the new monthly rate for service is $34.99. Is this correct?
Don't want to sound cheap, but I've been recently laid off and am trying to start a consulting business.

| I'm not sure if it is possible to remove the modem rental fee. For what I know, I think a user by the name of Mazakman on this site was able to get his rental fee removed because he had already owned his own modem and was using it for the service, since his SE567 was giving him problems with his PS3. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but you can wait for more replies. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

RacerbobPremium join:2001-06-24 Webster, NY | reply to Pat_P It is possible to have your own DSL modem and to get Frontier to waive the monthly modem charges. They are not going to give you any modem for free. Your best bet is to go to the Rochester Craigslist site and search there for a modem for sale... And yes.. get a wireless router too.

Chew the one in the second ad to $20 if they still have it ...
And there are routers all over the place on Craigslist...

I am not sure about the monthly rate for service after coming off a two year contract. Maybe Frontier can give you an honest answer on that. |

 | Thanks, Smith and Mazak. Mazak, I have heard that I must get a wired DSL modem from Frontier (hopefully for free) because it will contain "secret" codes which Frontier will not otherwise give me but are necessary to get service through a DSL modem. Is that correct? I suspect there might be a monthly charge from Frontier for a wired modem, though. |

1 edit | There's no secret code to get the DSL connected. You can use any modem you want with the Frontier service, you just need to know how to set it up afterwards. Pretty much to set it up, you need to set the VPI/VCI settings to 0/35, and you need to enter in your username and password for the PPPoE and then you'll be online. Mess up on the VPI/VCI settings and your modem will not pass any data despite syncing. Mess up on the PPPoE and you'll just get authentication errors in your modem's log. Nothing "secret" to Frontier's modems. They suggest that so that they can support you better, as their phone agents and the techs aren't trained to support non-ISP provided modems. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |
