Google voice question?

Not sure if this is the place but if I sign up for Google Voice and use my cell number for the service well I get charge minutes from Verizon? Most of my friends and family use Verizon so it is unlimited since its IN Network.

Unless you can designate your GV number as part of the IN Network (I don't know your plan), why wouldn't you get charged for airtime?

That is a very good question and may be the Achilles heel of Google Voice.

in network calling is generally determined by caller ID; though i can not say 100% that this is the case for verizon. that would mean that incoming calls would be considered in network for you. but since your friends are dialing your GV number they would be out of network for your friends and family.

As far as what Verizon sees, you will be talking to the google number from your cell. If the google number is not in your IN network, it will be like calling any other numbers and will eat your minutes.

You have now received pieces of advice that are diametrically opposed to each other. Why don't you test it and let us know the results? You should be able to see your call detail online, so you won't have to wait until the end of the billing period to know how the calls are treated.

It will charge your minutes, because the way google voice work is to have its system dial your number, then dial the called party. Both you and your family number will be charged minites by the cell phone companies.
