[Connectivity] Can rent gigabit modem via Comcast?

The first modem I received from Comcast was a Motorola Surfboard, which had a defective Ethernet port; now I have an RCA, but it seems to 'refresh' every few hours and my router has difficulty with it ... I also have a very slow upload speed, and my download speed also seems bad... the modem also has terrible latency.

I do have a gigabit network setup at my house, and I was wondering if it is possible to rent a gigabit-compatible cable modem (such as the ones that Linksys makes) through Comcast. Also, is the RCA or the Motorola modem superior? Thank you!

All have gigabit ports, they may not give it to you if you do not have either: Ultra (22/5) or Extreme (50/10)

There is no reason to have a modem with a gigabit Ethernet port, unless you have the business 50/10 plan where powerboost can potentially go above 100mbps. The Motorola SB6120 modem does indeed have a gigabit port.

Gigabit isn't going to be of any use to you until they start introducing 100mbps residential connections. Which won't be for a while in most markets.

Gigabit between your computers is useful for file transfers, but your comcast connection is not going to be able to saturate a 100mbps ethernet connection to your router. I think pretty much all docsis 3.0 modems have gigabit ethernet ports, so sign up for a d3 tier if you want piece of mind and future proofing.
