| [Travel] Plane to the Train (JFK)
I'm thinking about making a trip up to the Big Apple to visit the family and was wondering if taking the train from JFK is a feasible option? I'll only have one piece of luggage and will be getting the train after rush hour (just barely - Thursday @ 10-10:30AM). I looked on trips123 and they say I can get the AirTran to Station D (Jamaica Station) and then pick up the LIRR Babylon branch from there. The trip, accordingly to them, is only 45 minutes, which isn't bad at all. Is this a good way to go or should I get a taxi/car service? I was trying to make this a surprise so I don't want to ask anyone to pick me up. What do you think?
Thanks |

| Yes it is very doable and smart especially if you only have 1 bag. I know a lot of people who do it especially when they have a car but want to avoid the 40 dollara a day it costs to park the car there.
You mentioned the Babylon branch of the LIRR, what town will you be traveling to?
Cabs will cost you more than your air fare...lol |

| My first stop will be at Rockville Centre, thinking about staying at the Best Western, since it's right by the station. Then on to Baldwin, I was thinking about taking the N37 bus from there if I can check in early, since the bus will let me off a couple miles from my final stop. If I have the luggage I'll get a cab at the station. |

Since I live here and know the landscape, I could possibly tell you not to stay there or find a better place but for a similar price. Believe it or not, there are hotels here that would not be fit for a dog, so -to-speak. What is your price range for a hotel? |

| I used to live on the 'Island, in Freeport, it's been a few years since I've been back, I hope they still let me in, lol.
I stayed at the BW in RVC, the Best Western Mill River Manor, right before I left, and it wasn't too bad. I'll be in the Baldwin/Freeport/RVC/LB area for the most part so it's fairly centrally located and with AAA it's only $126/night. I'd like to stay around $500 for the 4 nights I'll be there, if I can help it.
My other option (from what I can tell) is the Best Western in Massapequa Park, Bar Harbour Inn, I believe. I haven't been there since they redid it. it doesn't look too bad, and it is equally as accessible by train. The Redroof Inn in Garden City/Westbury was sold out, so I couldn't check there. |

| Ok I took a look at the Best Western and it is nicer than I remembered, perhaps they invested some $$ in the property.
The only other suggestion would be a Holiday Inn but I think the one in Rockville Center is gone. It is a difficult area to get a hotel room since there are not many around. |

| Yup.
It's expensive regardless, $558 with taxes for the BW in RVC.
I also checked the Hampton Inn in RVC, I stayed there in '05, and it wasn't bad. They wanted $150 with AAA discount.
I was excited about the trip until I realized it would be $800 for airfare & hotel, without a ride. Now I'm starting to rethink things, lol. |
