Re: My Vonage Cuts in/out on upstream on Comcast

FYI, vonage is having a $12.50/mo promotion for a year for existing customers.

A ton more info over here at slick deals:

Man that tech carries a lot of crap with him....

Anyhow, there is no reason Vonage shouldn't work for you. Looks like the tech did a good job, perhaps he missed something or there is a problem at the tap. Your signal is ok.
What do the correctable and uncorrectable errors look like. It is best to power cycle the modem and check the results after about 10 minutes. If the correctable errors are high, there is an indication that there is a line issue (i.e. forward error correction or CRC correction may have avoided retries, but it is indicative of a problem). By high I mean after 10 minutes, it shouldn't be over 2000 on any given channel. It is common to have a bunch of errors right at startup and then they should be few. It is harder to judge over a long period of time, which is why I suggest rebooting the modem.

Looks like an outside plant issue. Like beachintech said, the levels are screwy. I'd guess it was a bad tap/plate.
Uploads were causing a problem for me for a while, and it turned out to be an amplifier down the block a way; it wasn't tuning well and staying in band so there was a bit of interference. I had a problem where my modem was rebooting often [at first every couple of days, but later several times per day ... SB6120 latest firmware]. The issue was finally determined to be a combination of the bad amplifier and the jack they put in where the cable comes into the office from outside of the house.

The speeds have improved because you got a new CMTS by changing IP addresses.
To my knowledge that is not possible. One always remains physically connected to the same CMTS at the same headend unless CMTS ports are deliberately changed by them. A change of IP addy does not change this.

I could be wrong, but I have changed my MAC, and gotten a different CMTS IP in a traceroute. It was at the same headend, but a different piece of CMTS hardware.

Even if it were so (not likely), how would you possibly know if it were a different CMTS ? WAN (public) IP addresses are assigned by the DHCP server.

P.S. Oh but I think I see what you are talking about now. But you still could not know that it was different hardware..

You are connected to one CMTS at a time and that's it. That CMTS however may have dozens of different subnets on it though.

Wait, there is more to this story. Here is more of the emails:

OK after my last test: Comcast > Vonage > Router > Computer, I connected it back to the best way:

Comcast > Router > Vonage> Computer

I have done this twice and powered them up in the sequence shown above each time and now my speed is:
15m/.3m

Oops! I know this can work. Am I powering them up wrong or should I just leave them running while reconnecting?

Check the QoS setting in the router. Make sure you either disable it or set it to 100% for both downstream and upstream. This will improve the speed as well.

Wow, look what I found with the router, see attached.

The router was on auto-detect.

That fixed it.

Heh - wished I read this earlier - I had the same issue during the install - though we noticed it right up front after getting wonderful upload speeds directly connected to the modem - then dog-slow speeds when connected via the router.

Also - you have your "Manual Uplink speed" set to your rated connection I assume? Try changing that value to 2x - 5x the rated speed. I have DOCSIS 3.0 in my area - though I'm only on the 12/2 tier. However - I consistently average 16/10 speeds. In short - the router will throttle that upload to exactly what you have it set to. I currently have mine set to 15000 kbps (DIR-655).

Also - disable QOS and Dynamic Fragmentation - those are really designed for lower speed connections...

Last but not least ....

If you're in a DOCSIS 3.0 area - you might want to invest in a DOCSIS 3.0 capable modem (i.e. SB6120).

I have a friend that originally had an SB5100 or SB5120 - not sure - that was having the same issues you're currently experiencing. He is using Vonage as well.

Part of his problem was that he was on the 12/2 tier - and was only getting approximately half of that particular tier - guess was that he had several heavy users in his neighborhood. After I suggested that he try upgrading to the SB6120 -which he did - his speeds are now consistently better than his rated tier - he's averaging 12-14/7-9. He couldn't believe the difference it made just from a modem swap (yes - I checked his old modem and his network settings / configuration / levels were all within the appropriate / usual ranges).

Long story short - Overall - from what I've seen from 3 different SB6120 upgrades now - having even DOCSIS 3.0 capable hardware drastically improves the overall connection.

Be advised that using a DOCSIS 3.0 modem with the 16/2 or 12/2 is not guaranteed to improve speeds over a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.
