 | My Vonage Cuts in/out on upstream on Comcast Location: Superior, CO Problem: when I talk on my Vonage phone line (upstream) it cuts in/out but the person I am talking to sounds fine. Intermittent: yes, but most of the time there is a problem Network: Comcast > Vonage > Router > computers Speed tests: fastest is 24m/.5m, slowest 5m/.192m, latency: never higher than 80ms Splitter taps and connectors: all from Comcast furnish and installed Splitter config: -9dB tap > Comcast modem
I called Vonage about a week ago when the problem started and they ran me through a bunch of tests and concluded that all their equipment was running fine and they told me to call Comcast.
I called Comcast, they looked at my signal level over the phone and said the signal levels looked off and will send a tech.
The tech came out and replaced all my connectors that I installed previously and replace the line across my yard from the pedestal to the NIC box on the side of my house. He then added some new splitters to get the levels where he wanted them.
We then tested Vonage and it worked great. Then after he left the problem came right back again.
I have had Vonage for over 4 years and the price has increased from $17.50 after tax to about $24 today (500 minutes). Should I just go with Comcast's phone service which is cheaper for the first year so I don't have Comcast and Vonage pointing fingers at each other and I can tell Comcast it is all your stuff just fix it? |

Anyhow, there is no reason Vonage shouldn't work for you. Looks like the tech did a good job, perhaps he missed something or there is a problem at the tap. Your signal is ok. |

Well, your upload speed is very slow slow, so even if you got comcast phone service it may not work as well. In my area the phone service is $20/mo for the first 6, and then up to $33/mo
What speed tier are you paying for? Blast?
As a tip, I recommend running a speed test before the tech leaves |
|
 | The levels after he left were: s/n: 38dB power level: -4dB upstream power level: 33dB
My computer is not pingable so it will take me a minute to figure out how to do a line quality test. |
|
2 edits | Go into your router setting and enable ICMP Ping
How is your speed after he left? |
|
 | On my Dlink dir-825 I can't figure out where to enable ICMP Ping. I am still looking for it.
The speed test after he was done was around 16m/.500m.
I am paying for normal internet, i think it is $45 a month. |
|
 | For $45 a month, it could be anything: 6/1, 12/2, 16/2, or 22/5
for any of them, your UL speed is horrible |

|
 | I couldn't figure out how to make it pingable but I did the test anyway. Perhaps there is some info in there of value. |

1 edit | Everything appears to be in order as far as Ping goes. try this: »myspeed.visualware.com/voip/ |

andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | reply to DrumAt5280 Have you checked your modem logs? By me, I've had an issue where they are starting to do alot of Dymanic Channel Changes (DCC) to balance load. This can cause 5-10 second modem outages, and maybe 15-30 outages for software trying to recover from the loss. |
|
 | The log files are clean up til the time the tech was here. |
|
 | reply to DrumAt5280 looks like you have a splitter installed backwards, going off of the picture of the housebox. you might want to check that out, if the tech didn't lock it. that may help. |
|
1 edit | I think your right - That is interesting... It looks like one splitter runs right into another as well. |
|
 | reply to DrumAt5280 yeah, 2-way feeding another 2-way. an unbalanced 3-way would do the same thing (3.5 dB on one leg, 7.5dB on the others). looks like he was isolating the modem in front of the rest of the house. |
|
 | Why would one want to do that? Wouldnt an unbalanced 3 way do the same thing, but with better signals? |
|
 | I will run out and take a much clearer picture for you guys.
Please hold... |
