| Motorola SB3100 and 20Mbit Plan (eeek!)
I recently posted in another thread regarding me switching to the 20Mbit plan offered by Charter and still running the Motorola SB3100 modem that I bought in 1999. I've made the decision to purchase a new modem because I'm just getting horrible speeds downstream (7Mbit-10Mbit which is what I always got when I subscribed to the 10Mbit plan). I've spoken to Tech Support a few times and they assure me my account is on the 20Mbit plan. I get 2Mbit upstream, so I'm sure my account IS setup properly.
The question(s):
Motorola SB3100 modems are DOCSIS 2.0 capable of 38Mbit, theoretically...Why should I expect better performance (bandwidth) by upgrading to a SB5101, SB5102 or SB5120? All of those devices are DOCSIS 2.0 as well, and therefore are not capable of theoretic limits higher than 38Mbit downstream connections.
Also, would I be better served to just go ahead and purchase a SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 modem since the cost increase isn't too bad versus the other DOCSIS 2.0 modems? I had 10 years of good use from the SB3100 and I would imagine that speeds over 38Mbit will be rolling out within the next few years in my area: Springfield, Massachusetts.
Any information/suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Chris |

1 edit | my recommendation is getting a docsis 3.0 modem
the sb3100 has a 10 mb earthnet port (after you factor in overhead you get 7-10 mbit)
sb3100 is not even docisis 2 is a docsis 1.1 complaint modom
just looked it up your modom is older then the docsis 2.0 spec docsis 2.0 was realsed in December 2001 |

| Thanks zed260...I was just getting ready to reply to my original message that I noticed the SB3100 is indeed only DOCSIS 1.1 compliant. That certainly makes sense - however - I'm still curious as to why the Motorola spec sheet on the modem claims 38Mbit maximum.
It does make sense to just go with DOCSIS 3.0 at this point.

1 edit | reply to alb123 Wow that modem is old! You will notice a nice performance increase and faster speeds with the new modem. I actually had a older modem myself not to long ago. It was a Toshiba PCX2200. It was 5 years old or so and still worked great. But, when I upgraded my speed. It could not handle it. It would top out at about 7-8mb. I am on the 20mb/2mb plan now. |
