OK, I hate this game now.
A few months ago I got a free trial disc for Age of Conan included in my PC Gamer mag. I put the disc on my desk and ignored it for awhile. This weekend I thought I'd finally install it and check AOC out. After the initial installation, it wanted to update so it started downloading an 11 gig patch. When that finally finished, it started downloading a 7 gig patch. Unfortunately, the patch download speed was horribly slow so the patch process started on Thursday night and finished about 10:00 Sunday night. Once the stupid program was finally ready to run, I fire it up only to get several dozen error messages about some sort of keyboard and mouse software. Once I click through all the fluff, the intro movie plays and I'm at the login screen. I click on manage account and try to set up a trial account, but there's nothing like that available.
After looking around on several forums, I see that they have suspended all trial accounts for AOC. People unfortunate enough to have paid for it were laughing about it, saying "They don't have the guts to let someone see how broken this game is before paying for it."
So I suffered through an entire weekend of a laggy internet connection while it downloaded 18 gig of patches, only to have the software error out and the trial account to be vapor. Thanks for convincing me to stay away from your game, Funcom. -- It's a trick. Get an axe. - Ash |

| reply to footballdude I agree about the patching, it's ridiculous. I bought AoC when it was $9.99 on steam. I downloaded the game >20GB IIRC, then upon launching the client went on a downloading spree that lasted the better part of the afternoon (on a 6MB down connection).
Finally, I was able to launch the game. I played maybe 20-30 minutes and that's all I needed to figure out the game wasn't for me. IDK what all the graphics hubub was about. I was playing it on max settings and it looked about like titan quest did (a 3+ year old game). |

| reply to footballdude It is a shame about AoC.
I had high hopes for the game, myself.. Unfortunately, it came with no mid-end game content, and bugs galore.
I really REALLY hope 38studios knocks one out of the park with what they're developing.. ( 38studios.com ) The makers of Spawn and Drizzt on board looks very VERY promising.. |
