[Internet] Can not get IP address from PPPoE server

Recently, on several occasions my BEFSX41 V1 router with 1.52.15 firmware couldn't connect to the Internet. The error message was "Can not get IP address from PPPoE server". After a failed connection attempt, the status page would show a default gateway address, but the IP address would be 0.0.0.0. Power cycling the router clears all addresses there, so I think the default gateway address came from the PPPoE server.

I called Bell support once. I was told to connect the computer directly to the modem, and I was able to connect. Bell support started a conference call with Linksys support. Then when I tried to connect via the router, that worked too (without any changes to the router). So, that support call didn't provide any answers.

Last night when this happened, the error alternated with inability to contact the PPPoE server. I tried to connect via other computers, both via PPPoE passthrough and via a direct cable connection to the modem. Most of the time it didn't work, but on a few occasions it did. Finally I managed to connect via the router.

When I have a connection, it seems perfect.

Is this a Bell problem or something on my end?

I am not familiar with that router, but as a second tho. I do not think your router is the issue there. I had a similar to your where my router could not obtain the ip from pppoe server. My router was dlink. Just blame bell for a sake of living. For me now, if I ever run into issue, most likely is bell side. However, I had never had many problem when I was with rogers.

Sounds like a line problem, not a modem or router problem.

Odd, you are the second person to mention PPPoE login issues with Bell.

The next time it occurs try resetting the modem (with your router off or disconnected), then power it up and see if it works. (Having the modem reset and up and running before your router might help ensure that the modem is ready when the router asks for login) I am betting it’s NOT your router.

Somewhere in the Linksys configuration pages look for a setting called "Keep Alive" making sure that it is selected (otherwise your router in essence hangs up on Bell and will not reconnect until you attempt to use the connection again)

Do you have the 5200 Speedstream modem (either 5200 e240 or e242)?

I have a SpeedStream 5360 modem. Once in a while in the past I lost connectivity and power-cycling the modem fixed the problem. When the "Can not get IP address from PPPoE server" error happens power-cycling the modem does not help. In the past when it did help, I got a different error message which said the router was unable to communicate with the PPPoE server. (I forget the exact words.)

I notice another thread here ( »[Internet] Sympatico Outage in the 519 ) about a recent outage in my area. Maybe the most recent time I got this error is related.

Try connecting with test@test and the password test to see if you are able to get an ip. If you can't connect then I would give a call into tech support.
