Those are some nice deals...anyone else on here have any opinion about this? Is there enough access given for example to edit php.ini, my.etc, ssh, etc? Can we install mod_security ourselves?
Do you have any websites that you can share with us that is moderately visited to see how well it loads through the browser? Also....

What happens if the site gets Digg'd for a few hours, will it be suspended? Granted VPS is supposed to isolate users, something as bad (good for publicity) being Digged can really kick the connections up there. And what version of php/mysql are installed by default. |

| You'll have root access to the VPS so you can modify any of the files to your settings as long as they don't disrupt the node.
Due to our privacy policy we can't share the sites our clients host with us.
If your VPS starts disrupting the node for more than 24 hours continuously you'll resources and uplink will be capped. |

1 edit | reply to PhotonVPS Thanks for the quick reply! Anything negative if I'd like to use lighttpd instead of Apache for example?
Do you guys install php5/mysql5 on a default install? Can it be left alone for the user to install themselves?
Like I only host a wordpress and phpbb3 site for about 50 users but I like VPS for the extra control provided over shared. What kind of usage would warrant service being limited. I wouldn't expect any kind of heavy traffic whatsoever.
Sorry about the website question, don't even know why I mentioned that at the time |

4 edits | reply to PhotonVPS I just signed up.
I selected Beam 1 I selected CENT OS 5 (32bit) CPanel and Fantastico too. The total cost for 3 months was $43 can't complain so far I'm really looking forward to dumping both my current hosts and moving all seven domains to the VPS.
I was looking at going with a Windows setup but a lot of my sites run on PHP and wordpress so I figured it would be too hard to convert all that over so I'm sticking with Linux.
EDIT: since making this one complaint I have is they don't roll the add-ons into the final price. I paid for 3 months of hosting it was $29 and when I was making the payment it said $43 was due but when I made the payment it only took the $29. I had to make a seperate payment for the add-ons (Cpanel and Fantastico)
That is really annoying please roll your addon costs into the final cost.
EDIT 2: Well its been over an hour on the website it says "instant setup" but I know it says here it could take up to 24 hours. When I made my last payment it auto opened a ticket saying so and nobody has gotten to it.
EDIT 3: its 1pm central time and I still don't have an e-mail or anything I've paid them and I still don't have service. If I don't have my vps working in seven hours I'm getting my money back.
They must not be 24 / 7 (even they say they are)maybe I'm expecting too much.
EDIT 4: Took about 3 hours to get my high priory ticket answered. I asked what is going on and got a pretty lack luster answer. I'm almost wondering if the positive reviews on WHT are made up or something this is ridiculous its been 21 or so hours since placing my order.
What bugs me is they claim "Instant setup" I was told "Instant setup on some packages" don't claim something you can't backup I'm already skeptical on the 24 / 7 support. They have 3 hours until I ask for my money back.
EDIT 5: Well they came though and got me my vps setup now I'm just waiting for the VPS Manager (Fluid VM) to be setup and I'll be good to go. In a few days I'll leave a review of what I think this is my first vps and I'm excited. -- That was the wild boar.... Moo! My podcast: The Banzai Beat »www.banzaibeat.com |

| reply to PhotonVPS September 21: I signed up for WARP2 which is the same as the ZAP accounts for Windows less the licensing cost. They let me use WARP2 for Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter x64 with my own license. Initially they set my VPS up improperly with Redhat Linux, so I had to wait longer for them to install Windows, and when they did I was set up with plain old Windows Server 2008. They agreed to install R2 if I sent them an ISO, the technician "Steve" who was working on this had no place for me to upload it to and he wouldn't download the ISO from my FTP. I ended up uploading the ISO to my VPS and set up and FTP there for him to get it, and once he got it he had no clue what format it was in or how to decompress it - I used 7-zip to compress it. I gave him links for where to get programs to decompress the archive for Windows and Unix and he didn't seem to bother, days past and still no set up - finally the director stepped in and said he'd handle it, and I got word the Windows admin wasn't handling his support tickets and got fired.
September 29th: Today they finally got R2 and are in the process of installing it, nearly two weeks later. Normally if I had this kind of bad service I wouldn't do business with them and cancel service, but luckily I didn't need this up ASAP and it's more of a little experiment than anything so I'm willing to tolerate it. Plus I understand I ask some special requests that they weren't repaired for, including that 2008 R2 isn't being sold yet so I didn't expect them to have the necessary experiencing or software to install it.
As it took so long, they adjusted my payment cycle for the 29th so I didn't pay for anything since this started and I'll still get a full month starting the time R2 is up and running. I think for the price this host is a good value, cheapest around I think and as long as you sign up for normal service everything should be fine. I'll be back to review overall service performance later, so far remote desktop is really slow to control over this thing.. |

| reply to PhotonVPS For reference I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter x64 and am using Subsystem for Unix Aplications to run IRCd, IRC services, etc. I'll be using Internet Information Services 7.5 for HTTP, FTP, DNS, and everything else. Should be fun- I like that I can run software from platforms pretty much seamlessly, Unix software needs some adaptations occasionaly to build and to make sure compiler flags are right, and that's beeen a huge pain, but it works if you know what you're doing. |

| reply to PhotonVPS They had trouble getting 2008 R2, then they couldn't use my key, and ended up getting their own but it was for Standard edition, and managing the server was too long and performance sucked so I ditched it. Upload was performing very slowly, 400kbps - they respond to email quick, but doing the deed can take many repeat requests and many days, so I canceled. I think their Linux support is probably less problematic though, don't want to discourage people from trying it out. Stay away from the Windows VPS though, it sucks bad. |
