| How's everyone's speeds been lately?
I chose to go with knology about a month ago (att dsl and comcast are also available in my area- Augusta, GA).
When I first got knology there was a problem with "my tap" it barely worked, if at all. After that was corrected, the download speeds seemed to be all over the map varying anywhere between 2.5Mbps to 5.5Mbps.
A week or so after going with Knology I discovered usenet and all its glory. (Hopefully knology doesnt discontinue this service like almost all other ISPs already have).
Over the past week I've noticed my downloads have been very stable at a constant 799KB/s ~ 6.5Mbps.

| Knology has been a living nightmare for us. Their speeds are all over the place, and competition here offers faster residential speeds than Knology offers it's business lineup. |

1 edit | reply to anonAUGUSTA For several months they were pretty bad. Speeds have been up/down ever since they rolled out 6Mbps. They were pretty solid back in the 4.5Mbps days. Most recently there was a lot of documentation in this thread:
»Knology IS the worst cable ISP period!
However, the past couple of months have been pretty solid on the city side of Panama City. BiGdUsTy has a good view of the beach side. Speeds have been just fine on the 'net and usenet. I can hit solid 6's on usenet - I was getting 2.5-3.4Mbps most times before with the occasional hit at 6.

I hope PCB is one of them. |

| Roger that, I'd gladly accept DOCSIS 3.0 in augusta.
2.5 MB/s - 5MB/s usenet transfers would be nice, and maybe enough upstream bandwidth to host the occasional game server.
But if the 6Mpbs upgrade was bumpy, i wonder what knology's real world speeds on DOCSIS 3 is going to be like. |

| Does anyone know which markets knology competes with another cable providers? ie comcast... and if which of those has comcast already rolled out DOCSIS 3...
Knology previously stated they would only roll out DOCSIS 3 in areas where competition had already done so. I'm wondering if that's the case with these 3 markets they're rolling out. |

| reply to anonAUGUSTA The speed DOCSIS 3 will bring is nice and all but my biggest complaint with Knology is the high pings. I hope DOCSIS 3 will help them out otherwise I'm ready to jump ship. I've been with Knology since 2002 and it's getting really really REALLY old... |

| reply to marcusm88 In the Panama City/PC Beach, FL area they compete head on with Comcast. MediaCom is in some of the outlying areas but I think they are more competition to Comcast as I don't believe Knology has built out that far. AT&T is also here but I don't believe they offer TV yet. -- Certified Jenius! |

| reply to anonAUGUSTA Look' s like Comcast is making the push for DOCSIS 3 here in PCB/PC as today they moved around a lot of there channels and from what I've heard nuked most if not all of there analog channels.
»www.wjhg.com has a video news story about it.
So it looks like Comcast customers will soon be able to hit there 250 gigabyte cap faster and for more money. |

lol... yep. I was talking a friend a week or two ago. He was basically saying "no one needs to download more than 250GB per month" (he's obviously never used usenet).
I found an article stating the cap still applies to the DOCSIS 3 connections... then calculated how long it would take to go over the limit on their fastest speed:
50 megabits per second = 6.25 megabytes per second
250 gigabytes = 256,000 megabytes
256,000 / 6.25 = 40960 seconds
40,960 seconds = 11.3777778 hours
So the 50M connection downloading at top speed constantly would reach the 250GB limit in about 11 and half hours. |

Front page DSLR news states Mediacom will be increasing their standard tier from 8/512 to 12/1, which is double Knology's. Definitely looks like Columbus should be a prime market for being one of if not the first to go live with DOCSIS 3.0. We can only hope!
I'd switch, but Mediacom has had SERIOUS issues with their internet reliability for the last couple of years. Knology's uptime has been superb. |
