1 edit | slow load google maps since uverse (yes, it's the RG's DNS) On 2 XP machines, and 1 Vista that I've tested so far, in both Firefox and in IE8, the first time I load Google maps I get this strange delay where certain boxes don't load. Most of the time, if I wait, those boxes will turn to the image with the message that there is no map details at this level, and I should zoom out. Then, if I zoom in, and back out, everything is fine. If I don't wait for the images to load, and just start using the map as-is, other images won't load and will get stuck at blurred zoomed-in images, until 3-4 seconds later, when things will finally load.
It's really annoying because it makes just quickly opening a new tab and trying to zoom in to my state to find something take a lot longer than it should, since the map is half unusable until this goes away. It keeps happening over and over again to me, and NEVER happened when I was just on AT&T ADSL 6Mbps. Now I am on U-Verse Max18. |

One of the few issues that has been in the 2wire, and gone unfixed for years now. I suggest you either put a router behind the RG, and distribute ATT dns through that, or hard code it in each PC you use. |

Ark join:2002-06-08 Ada, MI | Is this really a DNS issue if most of the images are loading and only that 1/4th of them aren't? I thought all the image tiles on Google maps would be coming from the same domain name. |

 | reply to Ark We occasionally have the same problem in OS X 10.4 and 10.5 with Safari and Firefox. I've only noticed it with Google maps and it started immediately after switching to Uverse. I have not tried hard coding in the DNS servers. |

| reply to Ark I run a local Linux server which has DNS set up (hints to root-servers), but since I switched from 8 statics to 1 dynamic on U-verse, I just let all my computers fetch a 192.168.x.x address. Using the currently assigned DHCP address of the Linux server as my DNS *SEEMS* to fix Google maps, which I find strange. I will report back in more time how it continues to go with that fix though. |

 | reply to Ark I started using OpenDNS 2 days ago and my google maps works perfectly now. ATT really needs to get a flame under its butt with all of the dns problems, especially if ATT plans to use error 404 pages for advertising $. |
|
 | reply to Ark You are fetching dns from the 2Wire proxy, which is supposed to fetch it from ATT dns. Just hardcode the ATT dns servers, or grab dhcp from your own box, and you will be fine. It is the 2wire RG causing the problem. |

Please send me your account information by PM (private message) or to uversecare@att.com, sounds like it could also be outside wiring or maybe just a problem with the U-Verse gateway itself.
Thanks, Matt

| Sorry Matt, but the above posts appear to be correct, the 3800HGV-B with 5.29.105.94 appears to have some sort of horrible DNS related issue that hasn't been resolved in a very long time. I keep trying Google Maps since switching nothing except my DNS setting from auto(dhcp from the 2wire RG) to the IP of my Linux server, and it has worked instantly and without issue every single time, where as it failed to load quickly every single time before that change. |

| I wouldn't call it resolved, but there is a work-around for this issue that isn't that difficult (even if you don't run your own Linux DNS server, you can still set your DNS to AT&T's or any other DNS server out there instead of using the RG's).
Resolved would be a firmware update that fixes the 2wire RG to not do whatever exactly it is doing wrong with DNS here. |

ozzy6900 join:2005-01-11 West Haven, CT kudos:1 | Go to "Network Connections" and find the connecton that you are using (NIC or wireless). Right click on that connection and select Properties. Slide the right hand bar down until you see Internet Protocol and click ONCE on that - then select Properties. In the lower part of this box is where you select "Use the following DNS.....". Then you enter the IP address of the DNS server you want to use and the alternate.
Be careful as this can mess up your Internet access.
If you screw things up, just go back to that last box and return to the default "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and that will fix your mistake. |

 | reply to Ark Matt, Please escalate this issue. Also please escalate that there is no information on the Uverse Support site to resolve this. It will save everyone (including ATT) a lot of time to if the simple work around is posted. Thanks, Tom in Kansas - A Much Happier Uverse Customer
I have tried both the second RG (Apple Extreme) and hard coding. Both work well. I don't use OpenDNS as I know ATT will have much tighter privacy and security protections.
Setup: Uverse 3800HGV-B 12x1.5mbps service + Uverse Voice Apple Extreme (11n 5GHz mode) as AP Airport (11g) as AP mode Fonero's WiFi router Sprint Airave Femto cell Vonage VoIP Linksys PAP2 w/ Gizmo5 Service |

Re: slow load google maps since uverse (yes, it's the RG's DNS) I found a fix for this that seems to work. Follow the instructions on this page:
