Field Day best practices? So at my clubs last meeting we had a debrief of field day. One of the topics we discussed was bolstering our contesting activities.
Now a little background to set the perspective. This club always does a great job of maxing out on all the bonus opps for points. We usually run 6A +/-1. However, we at best have 2 radios fully booked with ops for the full 24. Building antennas and the educational aspects of field day are well covered, which in turn negates the whole idea of setting up withing an hour before the contest.
Now it sounds like several of the members wish to make a better attempt at contesting. Only three or four members are really hardcore contesters, enough to cover one or two xmitters for the whole contest. The question was brought up what do the competitive clubs do, antenna wise, transmitters, scheduling ops, and so forth. I have my idea of what would work, but I know we have some pro floating around here so I figured i should ask. | | jacour Premium Member join:2001-12-11 Matthews, NC |

We did a joint event with another club. They had lots of toys (one of the guys owned a big equipment rental outfit so we had tents, generators, you name it) while my club was full of hard cord ops.
We had two hardcore contesting guys that operated 24 hours straight with nothing but a bathroom break, a busy GOTA station, and two normal radios that we kept staffed pretty easily. Antenna wise, we had a multi-band vertical on a tripod, an absolutely amazing delta beam for the GOTA station, and dipoles for 80, 40 and 20. It was set up in a park that had tall light poles for lighting the baseball diamond so it was easy to set up the long run for the dipoles (three antenna in a straight line). | | |
