Re: Is Aion worth it?

Considering that Guildwars of which I own all of them is very sucsessful, I think this one will be as well. Looks like killer gfx, and worlds.

Like Guildwars was and still is ahead of its times in terms of gfx. The other MMO's just look to cartnoonish too me. I like realism.

Well consider what the purpose of game guard is.

You buy this game and pay a monthly subscription. Wouldn't you want some assurance that cheating is being thwarted?
Yeah...but the problem is, hackers and even people who are having problems with getting GameGuard to actually play nice with their PCs (which is a LOT of people) can easily bypass GameGuard in less than 5 minutes and still play the game. Just google GameGuard Bypass. It's not hard, and nobody has been banned from doing it yet (to my knowledge, but in most of the forums I lurk in that deal with AION (some shady ones in there), there's not been a single report of it so far).

Other than GameGuard being a complete waste of time dealing with (doesn't play nice with most AV / Firewall / Anti-Malware programs, and installs like a rootkit), AION is indeed a fun game to play.

Ummm...there are different voice packs / sounds for different regions. Also, the only "Asiany" part of games I don't like is grinding, which is also something that is being lessened for the NA release. Combat sounds are probably one of the lower things on my list of "to play or not to play" list, and I can think of plenty in WoW or other MMOs that I really could live without.

I agree.

I am going to play the beta this weekend and decide for myself. If its fun, I will probably pick it up. If not, then I may just not go for it.

Guild Wars was ok, but not something that really took hold of me. I am hoping for something different from Aion.

NCSoft seemed to be good as far as graphics and play.. but the economy was screwed. They seem like to "not care" about gold sellers and the economy in their games go to hell.

Example: I played L2 for a time, and got to the mid-20's.. when I saw the "next set of gear" was being sold for 7 MILLION, and Im picking up... 5-10-20 at a time? I thought I was dong good with a couple thousand saved up.. MILLIONS? Oh f-this.. Im not buying in-game money for Real money just to play the game.. ~uninstall~

So, I always associated NCSoft with "horrible economy". Now, maybe getting in at the beginning of an MMO would be helpful, but Ive also been a part of several "MMO Launches" and never had a good experience.

Vanguard, AoC, DDO.. All either buggy as hell or no content. I even pre-ordered AoC with the same promise of "pre-launch play" but got f'd on that deal.

GW - This was ok.. Pseudo MMO.. Very Linear.. go from A-Z, and youre done. All thats left is PvP.

LotRO... good launch, game seems decent, just not my kinda thing. Classes are all weird (healers playing music... you lost me)

Warhammer - No PvE. Max Level and all thats left to do is PvP.

Darkfall - If you could buy the game, that would be one thing. Completely Screwed up launch, bugs, class imbalance, and the people who got in on day one are now kings.. starting that game new is a nightmare.

On one hand, Aion really intrigues me... but on the other hand, I dont want to beta-test another MMO that was "just launched" only to see another one fail miserably, and another $50 gets tossed in the trash.

WHO has PvE at multiple levels. LV is end game, LOTD is end game, Bastion Stair, Gunbad, the city instances, etc etc. I dont do any of it cause I play the game for PvP reasons, but it is there. What do you expect to do at max level in a PvP game?

GW was designed for 1 thing and 1 thing only: PVP. PvE wasnt focused on until after the PvP was laid out...

WAR had lots of PvE during my short-lived levelling, just wasnt the classic dungeons and instances like we're now used to. also i never got close to end-game so no comment there.

about your Aion comment...it's already released in Asia and is very solid. NA is simply getting a translated version with some regional tweaks (supposedly) like less grinding needed compared to Asia.

And your statements about L2's economy are correct, but they're dead opposite wrong! the economy was actually under-priced due to the farmers b/c of massive influx in materials. without the farmers, materials would have been EXTREMELY more expensive. the amt of time, energy, and currency it took to acquire ANYTHING in L2 was one of the 2 biggest killers to the NA version of the game (other being the grind).

Yeah Aion isnt going to be just another buggy/crappy MMO, if you play the NA beta you would see how good condition the game already is in, especially when you compare it to AOC and WHO at their launch. It runs really good on maxed settings as well

Well crappy is in the eye of the beholder. I'm taking the cautious enthusiasm approach. From the limited time I played AION, I saw no glaring bugs and it looked pretty polished to me.

Warhammer, on the other hand, was a bug-ridden mess at launch. I can't even begin to count how many times that turd of a program crashed to desktop of black-screened on me.

reading up on it, it has been out for awhile now in Korea. so really the raw code has likely had the major bugs hammered out(i mean you dont have to recode the graphics engine to change regions).

now my wish is and it may just be i need to remap my controls, is fully control flight with the mouse rather then the R/F keys(ie use the mouse like a flight control, push forward to dive slide back to climb)

If you want a game that is more 'real' than look into LOTRO(lord of the rings online) It has a unique PVE end game content system and the leveling isn't a grind, it's more like walking through middle earth and enjoying it's awesomeness while leveling on the side. Of course you can grind your way to 60 ASAP, depends on how you like to play.

I am currently playing the closed beta and its a ok game. Made it up to level 10 PvE grinding, but I would really like to read some reviews on what the PvP system is like when you hit 25 and can enter the abyss.

The PvE was ok as I said before. I got 2 characters leveled and I do have to say the game does look amazing. The thing is that I didn't get a chance to do any PvP. That is pretty depressing. I would have liked to experience the PvP a little sooner. At least with Warhammer I was PvPing at level 1 and I didn't have to do ANY PvE.

I am going to stay tuned to see what the next event brings, but so far, I am just not that happy about having to grind up 25 levels just to get a chance to PvP.

Does look a bit "Lineage 2-ish"

I did like L2, but as previously stated, the economy was completely screwed and thats why I quit.

I saw the set of gear for the level I was about to attain (D? I think? Its been awhile.. I was around L28-29-30) was 7 Million. If you put that in WoW Gold (since 100s = 1g.. L2 was one currency) that would translate into 70K Gold for a mid-level crafted set of gear. To which, I chuckled and uninstalled the game... simple as that

Well, AION is also one currency (Kinah) and yes, things like crafted and blue / yellow drops will be pretty expensive though it depends on the people who are pricing their stuff. However, with the 1.5 release Kinah and good drops will be easier to come by. Also, once you get started in PvP you earn AP points which you can buy PvP gear with. It's not the best of the best stuff (though it'll have some stats on it that you can't really get with regular drop / crafted gear) but it's definitely good enough to be competitive with. Probably the best gear will be the Draconic items, which are player crafted using material and recipes found in the abyss, but you have to be a master craftsman to make it and the crafting area to make it is in the Abyss, open to both factions. So, you'll have to have a few guildies with you to protect you while you craft.

The main thing is hopefully NCWest (NA division of NCSoft) will be more active in thwarting gold sellers so that the economy doesn't get bloated with Kinah, causing the economy to skyrocket. Given that they're using GameGuard as an anti-hack/cheat program for the game, I'm not really overly confident about it since you can easily bypass GameGuard with a simple .dll swap (In Chinese Aion it is overrun with bots and gold sellers, and yes, I did buy Kinah since it's pretty much acceptable to do there).

I'll give the NA version a few months of my time at least. Got nothing else to play really. Tried pretty much every other MMO out there and can't really say there's anything to be worth my time other than this game.
