[northwest] Trying to figure out if something is wrong with my F

This is my first post... total FiOS newbie here (though not unfamiliar with computers, hardware etc).

I had FiOS 15/2 service, and theoretically it was turned up to 25/15 on 7-15. Being the suspicious type, I checked my speeds with speedtest.net before and after the supposed change, and they were basically identical - roughly 13 down, 10 up. Based on this, I reported to Verizon that either the change had not taken place, or something was amiss.

I have two systems, a PC running Vista that is connected directly to an Ethernet jack (which goes to Verizon's router) and a Mac which is connected to a powerline Ethernet adapter, which goes to an Airport Extreme Base Station, which is then plugged into the wall. The two systems get basically identical numbers from speed tests.

I just got off the phone with a woefully under-trained Verizon tech. Basically all he knows to do is to run the FiOS Optimizer, and when that didn't work he told me that something in Vista (he had already punted on the Mac) must be blocking his tool from optimizing my RWIN correctly. He then suggested that I contact Microsoft to find out why his tool wasn't able to do it's job, and Apple to get their help with "optimizing my Safari". He also implied that since my connection "seems" fast, I might want to just accept that and move on.

I'll pause for the howls of laughter to subside...

Ok, so my questions:

1. How do I know for sure that I even have a problem? speedtest.net still says 13/10. speed.io says 25/9. Verizon's test says 25/25 (things that make you go hmm....). My assumption was that even if speedtest.net wasn't giving me 100% accurate numbers, I would at least see them increase after the speed was turned up. But now I'm not so sure.

2. Assuming I do actually have a problem, how do I figure out if it's on Verizon's end or if I truly do have something misconfigured? Is there some particular test I should ask them to run, or is there something I can check for myself? I have access to both the Airport base station and Verizon's router.

3. Is there anything else I should know, but don't know enough to be asking about yet?

Thanks in advance!

janine

Re: [northwest] Trying to figure out if something is wrong with

1) Which speedtest server are you using? Which city? If you haven't tried one of the SF Bay Area ones yet, try those, though I've read speedtest.net has problems with Vz' new 25/15 (and higher) tiers.

You will see higher thatn 25/15 because of the "fluff" on that tier (search this forum on fluff, you'll be amazed )

2) Have you run the FiOS optimizer from Verizon?

@verizon.net

I'm in Portland, Oregon and using the Portland server, which is hosted by Opus Interactive.

I just tried the Unwired server in San Francisco and got 26/16. That seems like what it should be, though I have no idea if it's accurate. But what concerns me is that I "should" have seen an increase in the numbers from the Opus server when Verizon turned up my speed, even if it's wrong, and I didn't see *any* increase at all.

Not seeing any fluff at the moment, but I'd be happy to just be getting the speeds I paid for!

As far as I can tell there is no FiOS Optimizer for a Mac. The Verizon tech ran it on the PC. It didn't seem to make any difference. He tried to run some other tool too but it wouldn't run on IE8.

1 edit

I've never gotten an accurate test number from the Opus speedtest.net server. [edit: I don't think it can handle FiOS speeds, frankly]

I have 20/20 and can get that on a pretty regular basis from the Smug Mug SF Bay Area sever.

You can run this on your mac from apple »www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/a···r10.html

It is possible the speed change did not complete properly, do you know if the CSA you spoke with had an NT verify the speed profile built on your ONT?

So it looks like things may actually be ok... I just shouldn't trust speedtest.net! The SF servers seem to be showing me at the speeds I should be at, though no fluff.

Thanks for the link, Fireguyy; I've installed it and it doesn't seem to have made much difference but that's still good to know about just in case I need it later. They may yet get 50/20 around here (I only live between two Intel plants, in a new development, you'd *think* we'd have everything, but no).

And no, I have no idea if the guy verified anything; if he did, he didn't mention it. Heck, for all I know I was getting these speeds all along; I don't have any way to know at this point.

Thanks to you both for the info! I feel better now, though I'm still frustrated with Verizon. If I had been having a real problem, that guy would have been completely incapable of diagnosing it.
