| | Panera Bread My local Panera Bread seems to be home for a small group of obnoxious, and often smelly individuals, who hang out there all the time for free WiFi (and free electricity). I call them "homeless with laptops." Another attraction is one can buy one cup for their coffee, and keep refilling it as much as you want from the self-serve coffee pots. This attracts cheapos who just don't leave.
The place used to be pleasant to go to, but now I avoid it. The last time I went, there was one of these guys in the restroom with clothes soaking in the sink while he was moaning in one of the stalls. I haven't been back since. | |

It used to be complete frustration when the lunch crowd would come in to eat and by 11:45 would be standing in queue holding their food trays waiting for any table to open up.
The booths were all taken by the 9AM coffee only drinkers with their laptops including in some cases books, accounting or something spread out over the whole table.
Now the managers come out and ask for receipts to see what time they came in and as for the loungers, will boot them out. One guy really lost it when he was asked to leave.
Yesterday in Panera during lunch out of a total seating of 52, I counted 12 laptops, of which 5 were listening to iPods while they typed away.
It has always baffled me why students will go to a Starbucks to "study". They bring laptops, books, notebooks and a iPod. I ask them why do they wear the iPod? "It's too noisy in here with everyone talking". I suggested they go to the library and they said there was no coffee there. I said why don't you study at home? "Too boring" I was told. So I ask, "why don't you study at the train station...the airport?" No answer.
So really what it came down to was that they just wanted to be seen. The impression of studying was just that, an impression. | |

I'd at least somehow push the idea of it being a public health risk.
Now there is always one method though I never understand why stores just carp and not exercise their most basic of rights: Right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. Said right extends, by de facto, to "Right to refuse access to the premises to anyone for any reason". | |
