Working without a contract

Having been thru several contract renewals with SWB, SBC, and AT&T, as long as the union doesn't call the strike when the contract expires, everyone just keeps working at their normal job at the normal schedule. Nothing changes, except that the new contract doesn't kick in with a possible pay raise. However, if true to form when the contract is finally signed, the pay raise, if there is on will probably be backdated to something approximating the original contract expiration.

Not quite sure where the usual union suck and non union rules got into this thread, but whatever. BTW, I was management at AT&T prior to retirement.

Seems more like people pointing out that a union is not always necessary. Being a member of a union does not mean you are any more qualified to do a job than a equally trained non-union worker.

Re: Working without a contract

Yep, you are right, being a union member does not make you more qualified than a non-union member, nor the reverse. Since Texas is a right to work state, just because there is a union where you work does not mean you have to join, or pay dues. However, there could be some peer pressure to join. I have known several non union workers who were not threatened, etc. to make them join.

In fact, in my position as a crew foreman, having a good union steward can work to the manager's advantage. The union steward, or the higher ups do not want to be tied up in grievances all the time and will do some self policing of the their members if there are problems with attendance, productivity, etc., looming.

Yes I hear a story all the time from acquaintances. They say unions are not needed anymore because they were only intended for protecting workers from the dangers of coal mining. As if that were the only reason unions were needed. They were fighting for pay straight from the beginning. Ironically my father is a West Virginia coal miner.

People always use that coal miner story when they are trying to make a point that unions have out lived their purpose as if unions only had one purpose and should have gone away after that purpose was completed.

If there is one thing I do is take advise from older people who have seen a lot of days. I find their view on things to be a much better perspective than somebody who heard a story about unions from their friends.

I watched it, didn't change anything for me. The video is just union propaganda. Guess we will have to agree to disagree.

Ah yes, the old man on the verge of death is merely union propaganda. Reciting his past with nothing to lose is obviously going to be biased towards liberals. Brilliant.

Or maybe you just don't want to hear the truth? Most likely.

No, I listened to what he had to say and realized it was just the union marching out and old man as a propganda tool. The union should be embarassed to use one of their members in such a shameless way.
You need to open your eyes and see there is a world out there beyond the union.
