Workarounds incoming...

I'd rather not have a camera (or anything like a camera) watching me watch what I watch on TV. There will be easy workarounds to this if it comes to light.

It already exists. It's called electrical tape.

The weasels will use the camera as the receiver for the remote control. No camera no remote.

Like a piece of black electrical tape over the camera.

IR emitter/receiver. Yes it would be a nuisance, but not a terribly expensive one.

theoretically possible, but HIGHLY impractical from a point of feasibility. this assumes the pulse does flood the camera to all white, which would be easier, but still not that realistic to do because of the high frame rate needed. going off another assumption, all someone would have to do is make a 'jammer', something to constantly send IR to make the camera useless.

anyways, NOT gonna happen.

on mythbusters, they demonstrated a plate of glass was able to block IR light coming from a person. i'm not sure if it would also block the remote's signal.

All Telco TV and Digital Cable TV boxes already spy on every remote button press/every thing you do. And they already sell anonymous data on every website link you visit.

I'll just walk in front of it nekkid a few times... It's been known to break mirrors, and standard cameras. Should be a good test of my ugliness.
Heck, if I walk around nekkid when I am watching TV, they might just shut the damn thing off if they get tired of seeing my ugly self all the time!

Yeah - I have Digital TV / TWC (DirecTV couldn't spy - no telephone plugged in ), however, I don't use the box. Sadly enough, I save a few $$/month just by having it... plugged in or not.

It's made of plastic just like the lens of the IR emitter on the remote.

That would mean not doing business with an ever growing number of businesses. There's now grocery (and other stores) that use shoppers' cell phone signals to track them through the stores. Some stores have started using their security cameras with facial recognition software to try to determine shoppers' product preferences. It's really kind of creepy. The DVR companies are just trying to get in on a game that's already well under way.

Ummm...no. You misunderstood what MythBusters said, or they used incorrect terminology. I have loads of CCD cameras with a glass lens and it can see people with IR illumination just fine.

BTW, some formulations of Lexan (tm) will block IR and pass visible light, but not near as effective as a "hot mirror" filter made of glass and a new plastic formulation from Lee Filters.

They might have been talking about thermal imagery which can be blocked by glass. My thermal cameras have sapphire lenses.

Do that, and it wouldn't surprise me if the TV turns to an Adult channel and charges you $19.99.
