An alternate view...

I'm not sure what worries me more, the fact that companies are considering this idea or that the consumers as indicated in this thread are rationalizing accepting this practice. A spy camera, infrared or not, will never be a problem in my household and no electrical tape will be needed. If you feel strongly enough to put electrical tape over the sensing device, go the extra step and simply not accept the device.

Your not in a position to be negotiating. Its hard to live without TV and/or phone and/or internet, like its hard/impossible to live without a car, without ID, without a cell phone, without a SSN, without any phone number, and without an address.

I agree, its not negotiable - sensing (spy) device, no sale, period. You and I both can live very easily without a DVR, HD or SD converter and in many cases where there are multiple options, you can easily switch to the other option that does not use such disgusting tactics.

You are in an excellent position to be negotiating. You do not need to accept these devices for any of the services you mention (TV, phone, Internet). Many people live just fine without owning a car, and you certainly do not need a cell phone. If you are so addicted to cable that you'll take everything they force on you then your lifestyle need a serious re-evaluation.

The SSN and address arguments are straw men. You can do better.
