Question on actual speed vs package speed

Hello,

I'm looking at hooking DSL up to a house, potentially (if Comcast's estimate to install new cable is too expensive). Embarq's site says I can only get up to 1.5mbps. I called Embarq and the guy said the house can get about 2500kbps. I asked a few times "so I'd order the 3mbps then" and he said no that's not available in your area, you'd get the 1.5 and then it would go about 2500kbps if the lines in the home are good. Is that correct? I thought if you order the 1.5, they hard limit it at 1.5, or am I wrong?

he probably means the sync speed for your home, but I'm not 100% certain.

Embarq overprovisions their lines so you can actually get the speed they state (when I had 3 megabit, I actually got about 3011 kilobits down, since it was overprovisioned).

If you order 1.5 megabits, that's what you'll get--no more, no less.

there's always the slight chance that you may be able to get higher than 1.5 megabit, but, then, again, if that 2500 kilobit quoted speed is, truly, your sync rate, then 1.5 megabits is the best you'll be getting.

That's what I was thinking, sounds like the guy was wrong or maybe confused by my question.

Now the real question: How much of a battle is it to get provisioned for 3mbps and to order 3mbps if their site shows I only qualify for 1.5? I know the language programmed into their script does not allow them to do this. I don't care if I only see 2 or 2.5. I do care that I don't want 1.5mbps if my line can conceivably go a bit faster than that.

I don't believe it works that way; there's different provisioning profiles on the DSLAM, from what I've heard; if you fail to meet the requirements of that particular profile, then they're not going to allow you on it.

ie: if your max sync rate truly is 2500k, they won't let you have the 3000k package, I don't think, since the profile for that is above 3000k, since Embarq over-provisions.

So what you are saying is that they won't provision me for my max sync rate even if I want to pay them more to do it? Lame. But expected, nonetheless.

1.5mbps is not broadband sadly, I may have to pony up Comcast's probably-going-to-be-ridiculous fee to run the line.

uhhh, yes it is...Congress' definition is anything over 768k down...even then, that definition is purely arbitrary in nature.

the latency will still be great compared to dial-up or satellite, and the speed will be a lot faster too.

In any event I'd check with Embarq_Joey See Profile before you make any decisions....I could be wrong.

Good Idea, I'll give him a holler. My definition of broadband is 2mbps, the only thing congress can define is their own salary. And that definition is way off too, in my opinion

I'd take 1.5mbps over satellite or dialup any day. But I'd also take 2-2.5mbps dsl over 1.5mbps :P

And thanks for taking the time to respond to my post!

and I'd take 1 gigabit over my 10 megabit, but all factors have to be considered.

I merely said it was their own definition; not that I necessarily agreed with it; if you'll note, I said it's "purely arbitrary".

Frankly, I wish they wouldn't have defined anything, as it's just something the industry can seek as the "lowest common denominator".

The term broadband, itself, is rather ambiguous, in some instances: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband

Of course, DSL speed, regardless of sync rate is always broadband in implementation, but not necessarily in regards to speed *chuckles*.
