DCX3400

I went to the Comcast office today to pay my bill and saw that they had the DCX3400. It looked sharp, I think I may swap my box. Does anybody know if they fix all the bugs on this unit? ie.. ir problems, and HDMI issues.

I never had any of those problems initially and certainly not now.

Another poster (djdanska) here mentioned that a fix was pushed out at the beginning of this month that resolved the poster's problems with the HDMI handshake.

Firmware 22.35 is supposed to fix the HDMI issues. But I heard the following issues with the box:

Green screens and HDMI issues (we know this one).
Caller ID on screen not working right.
No longer able to stretch SD in Native mode
New IR codeset requires more crafty 30-sec skip code.

If there's more issues post em. I think I'll wait this one out for a few more months.

Weird, I have none of those problems. Actually I don't know about the SD thing.

In fact, I spent all of 15 seconds programming the 30-second skip into my remote literally two days ago.

Since day one, my kids have chorused the number and caller name out to me when we get calls.

I think it's worth a shot. If it doesn't work, just go exchange it back. But, I personally think the PQ is better and the box itself works just as well as any other.

I got green screens before the update and occasionally now. I just switch inputs and it goes away.
I don't use the caller id.
I can't stretch in native though. I have to select at least one sd and one hd mode in the settings. I was finally able to get the 30 second skip but the new remote is different. If you have an old remote, keep it if you want. It will work with this box and doesn't require a new code. Mine worked fine.

Ok sounds better than I thought.

I know coming to forum sites your more likely to read about problems, because if it's working right, why post?

Some people may of had issues depending on their setup and the system they are on, including firmware version. I have no idea what firmware the Central PA DAC is pushing to the DCX boxes, so once I can confirm it is the latest version, that would ease the decision a bit.

My TV should be able to do the stretching instead of the box I guess. I can have it remember the video preference for each resolution type. I like the picture filled to not distort the plasma edges when watching too much 4:3 content. Currently in the DCH (and when I had the DCT) I have it set to stretch, so even SD content is upscaled to 1080i and stretched.

I agree with goober...the PQ is great.
It does however take a couple of seconds when the box swicthes resolutions from say 1080i to 720p or 480i, but that could be the TV? I think this box works great, and my callerID works also.
On a side note, I didn't know Comcast Central (960) was sent out in 480p, but it is.
Also....I hate stretch-o-vision so not being able to stretch SD doesn't bother me.
Kind of a brag..
Now that we have 100 HD channels I hardly ever have to watch a SD channel

I have had problems with sound. The HD picture will show up fast but on certain HD channels it can take a while for the sound to come through. This only happens on certain HD channels.

If anyone is having issues with this box and HDMI, please post the firmware version and the make / model of your TV.

I have a Samsung HPT-4254 Plasma. Right now it is using HDMI to a DCH-3416. I am using HDMI for 2 reasons. 1) Both Component hookups are used by other equipment, and 2)HDMI is the only input that allows 1:1 pixel mapping "Just Scan" zoom mode. Sure you see closed captioning data at the top on some SD channels and when HD channels broadcast in 4:3, but on HD you see the whole image without the 3% overscan lost past the screen's boarder.

I noticed a much better picture improvement going from a DCT-6412 phase 2 to the DCH-3416. If it keeps getting better, that sounds like a win-win!

I thought the PQ improvement was my imagination. I'm glad that some others have thought so, too.

I have the DCH 3416. Is this better than the DCX models? What is the difference between DCX and DCH? What I noticed with my DCH 3416 is it is way more responsive, and has buttons on the front allowing you to control it without a remote.

I've also noticed that the DCH is much more responsive then the DCT I had prior. So is the DCX yet even MORE responsive to the DCH? That would be heck of an improvement over the old DCT boxes.

They came out in this order (oldest to newest):
DCT Phase 1
DCT Phase 2
DCT Phase 3
DCH
DCX

The DCT-6412 Phase 1 and 2 are essentially identical. I think maybe just circuitry changes. The non-DVR DCT-6200 is basically a Phase 1 or 2. The 3 is marginally faster, has HDMI and eSATA, and a better MPEG encoder when tuning analog (moot since most areas now use digital versions.) The 3412/3416 is based on the 6412 Phase 3, but has no analog tuner.

Just got off the phone with the comcast office here in NorthEast Philly 19152 and they said they don't have any DCX3400 instock right now but will be getting in a big shippment on November 10 2009.

But also said some could come in at anytime between now and then.

Also if I live in 19152 Northeast Philly am I aloud to pick one up there?

I always thought I had to goto my local office.

Can't speak for sure, but I thought I saw them a couple months ago when I returned a DVR. At least they were on the stack of DVRs and had a much smaller footprint...

Bensalem(at the address above) location is a full operation, headend, lobby, equipment returns/issues, etc. Not just a hole in the wall storefront in a random plaza.

Not sure if you are in Philly that you can go to another county/corp code/system to get equipment... on my bill after this one I have locations further up in Bucks County, no NE Philly locations. Worst they say is no when they pull up your acct, but that would suck if you drive up there for nothing.
