| Sure AT&T might have the money... But they sure dont want to use it on unserved people in rural areas. You would have to be crazy for them to do that. They would only go serve rural areas if there were no strings attached if they didnt already go upgrade all other places with uverse first. You got to be a choosen one to get DSL with AT&T -- One day, High speed internet will be down my road! Willing to put DSLAM's or cable plants on my yard. | UVerse cabinets are expensive. They only make sense when you have a lot of customers within a wire-mile of the VRAD. Hence AT&T is forced to focus on urban areas if they want to pursue VDSL as their next-gen network.
Whereas fiber can go for miles, just like telephone lines, without amplification. So it makes a nice rural technology, which is why you don't see co-ops buying up VDSL equipment right and left. |

| Yeah its makes more sense putting them vrads in neighborhoods other then in the middle on nowhere. I was listening to one of the fcc meetings and they were talking about dsl repeaters that only cost 2 grand a piece and it would easily be used to bring broadband to unserved areas. Not really sure why AT&T wont do that so people can atleast have basic. Im only 80-2000 feet away from w/e and I think those repeaters would work just fine (hopefully). As for fiber, Its gona be very expensive no matter what. AT&T is too big and can do whatever the hell it wants. Right now they are pretty much say "no soup for you!" if you replace the soup with dsl.

| The problem is that, while rural telcos will use the line booster/DSL repear equipment (every customer counts) AT&T doesn't see a need.
I'm curious as to how many customers the $2k per repeater serves though. I could buy a nice point to point wireless system with DOCSIS-class throughput for a fraction of that. Or pay for a fiber install for a semirural customer. |

1 edit | What would I need to get wireless from point A to point B? |
Cool. I would like to join a wisp but I barely get a signal the map says. I found this website www.hwtx.com , that has like 30 towers they say. Found on my friend lives right by a tower and they say its good for gaming so he is gona try it soon and they got pretty good plans and caps. I know a place about 2 miles from us and they get twc that I can use. Do you know what I might need to get wireless from point a to point b? -- One day, High speed internet will be down my road! iansltx join:2007-02-19 Golden, CO kudos:2 | Ask over in the Wireless Service Providers forum. As long as you have line of sight though a pair of Ubiquiti Bullet Ms with some decent antennas may do the job. |
|
Duramax08A Challenger AppearsPremium join:2008-08-03 San Antonio, TX | will do, hope its not expensive..... |
|
iansltx join:2007-02-19 Golden, CO kudos:2 | If you want to go cheap, you can probably do everything for under $200. With the 802.11n stuff maybe closer to $300.
Then again, small price to pay to get off of dialup. |

Duramax08A Challenger AppearsPremium join:2008-08-03 San Antonio, TX | Do you know anything about "the bullet"? wonder if i can get that with an antenna and put it on top of the house and look for a wireless network...... |
|
iansltx join:2007-02-19 Golden, CO kudos:2 | Theoretically you could. It can be used as an access point, a client radio, etc. Just add an antenna. |

| »ubnt.com has a listing of resellers. Howeer Ubiquiti is rather infamous for supply chain problems. Seems everything is out of stock.
That said, I've been checking
»wisp-router.com »wlanparts.com
For stock updates. |
