Connecting two routers and two networks

I know this has to do with bridging and the possible use of 3rd party firmware, but I want to be sure. I searched the archive, but didn't find my situation. Here's my setup:

My friend across the street (line of sight) and I want to share files and folders wirelessly. We DON'T want to share internet, as we both have our own. He has a Linksys WRT54G (stock) with multiple computers on his network (192.168.79.*).

I have a Linksys WRT54GL (stock) with multiple computers on my network (192.168.1.*).

Given signal strength is strong, can we connect our routers wirelessly for file/folder sharing (and possibly gaming)?

Thanks,
Cygnusb

Some of these WRT linksys routers will not take a 3rd party firmware like Tomato.
