| | It's just business I see nothing wrong with Cablevision keeping their competitive advantage with MSG. Why do we need the Government to intervene to please a few sports fans?
If you want MSG-HD, get Cable!!!
Maybe if Verizon shared the FiOS lines and ATT/Apple opened up the iPhone to other carriers like Verizon, Sprint and TMobile I would be more sympathetic.
But as of now Verizon can go to hell.

| | | | Re: It's just business I also keep hearing people saying that the cable companies should bleed subscribers and go out of business.
What the heck for? Don't these people realize that the cable companies create local jobs and help the local economy?
Don't they also realize that without competition that there is NO incentive for any improvement?
I welcome competition from Verizon and ATT, but using the Government (FCC) to force your competitor to give up their competitive advantage is something I have a serious problem with.

If it wasn't for the local cable companies (large or small) many people wouldn't have a choice except for DirecTV or Dish and their 1+year contracts and outrageous fees for damn boxes $5+ a month for each room! NUTS!

Also, while with cable you can watch TV without a box, some providers do charge a fee per TV, which people usually get around by installing their own splitters. However, many cable companies are moving a lot of expanded basic channels to digital only, removing the benefit of being able to watch it on TV's without renting a set top. In fact, some inner city providers have been scrambling all of their channels except locals for almost 20 years, like Time Warner Cable NYC, where it's easy to steal cable since the majority of apartment buildings are pre-wired for cable and that was their only real way of controlling access per individual subscriber.
| | | | | | | Re: It's just business NOT all cable companies require it though like Dish and DirecTV. It's only needed to obtain the channels in the digital service range.
And as far as per TV charges ONLY the very small companies still do that.

| my cable co charges for their boxes, and additional for the dvr services, and depending on area, and additional for HD, though i'm not sure if hd is even in my area
as to the topic, this is ridiculous. since when does someone that OWNS something HAVE to sell if ot make it available? i always thought that if you wanted something, make a damn offer. if you can't buy it, make a product/service that competes with what you were turned down and make it BETTER.
oh wait, forgot we were talking about att/verizon

My cable company let me purchase the cards, which means that I pay no monthly fees. They also gave me the first SD box for free.

Verizon discontinued the analog some time ago, so that means that you need a box, cablecards or a clearQAM tuner to watch TV. Your older cable ready TV won't do. I don't see how this is different from the cable company.
