[Speed Problem] 5.8 seems to be The New ATT SPEED CAP for Old BE

I have had dsl here on Lake Lanier since Bellsouth first offered it and my Netopia 3347NWG provided near flawless 6.2 to 6.6 speeds but now the best I can get remains constant around 5.74 to no higher than 5.8. ATT has capped it clearly as this is at 3 am or 3pm. Where is the logic in a slow down when the object is to go faster? I miss my old Bellsouth! What happened to the faster service options I heard were coming? Has it all been used to provide ATT U Verse TV? Uploads seem capped at 439!

Nah, they are just giving it all to me.

I used to get a typical pseudo aggregate downstream speed on my two Xtreme 3.0 circuits of 5600-5700 kbps. Lately I have frequently been getting 6100-6300 kbps downstream.

Re: 5.8 seems to be The New ATT SPEED CAP for Old BellSouth

I'm curious as to your sudden loss of downstream throughput speed.

»Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?

If you don't mind could you please provide the information requested below?

Post a screen capture of the Home Page of your Netopia Wireless Gateway while in Expert mode.

You may want to edit the picture to obscure the serial number of you Netopia. You also may want to edit the picture to obscure your Local Address (IP Address) if you have a static IP address. If you have a dynamic IP address then it doesn't matter as you can restart the gateway to get a new IP address.

The reason why I ask for this information is because I need to see if your Netopia's Data Rate is high enough to achieve 6500kbps and I'm curious to know the Peer Address (Gateway Address).

Post the results of a speed test ran from the Atlanta, GA server at »speakeasy.net/speedtest/

The reason why I ask for this information is because this speed test at Speakeasy.net is accurate and consistently reliable unlike the Official BellSouth FastAccess Speed Test Website.

Post the results from the TCP Analyzer at »www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php?

The reason why I ask for this information is because I need to see if your computer is properly tweaked for FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 service.

Same thing has happened here. Been like this for about 2 months now. No higher than 5.8, used to be 6.5 on speakeasy.
When i do dsl installs and check the customers speed on speakeasy most of them are still at 6.3 and up, very strange....

What are you using to bond the connections? I've used
the Syswan Dual wan router. I dont bond them per se
just assign different servers IE netflix, voip.ms to one WAN
interface.

I sent you an IM. No point in cluttering this thread with an OT subject.

Re: 5.8 seems to be The New ATT SPEED CAP for Old BellSouth

Looks like you are in the same boat as us other fellows are that went from 6.5Mbps to 5.8Mbps on the downstream side.

Everything on your end looks good. Doesn't seem to be anything on your end that should keep you from getting full speed.

You might want to disable Receive Window Auto-Tuning. Disabling it won't increase your speed but this feature is not necessary for use with FastAccess DSL due to the fact that FastAccess DSL is a high bandwidth low latency connection as opposed to a high bandwidth high latency connection. Receive Window Auto-Tuning can also cause problems in certain situations so disabling it now will eliminate potential future problems.

Note if you are using a wireless connection then you might want to set the Receive Window Auto-Tuning level to highlyrestricted.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=highlyrestricted

How do I run a command with elevated privileges?

Some commands that you can run using Command Prompt might require elevated or administrative privileges. To run these commands, you can use the Run as administrator command:

1. Click the Start button.

2. In the Search box, type command prompt.

3. In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

You might be able to gain back some of the speed that was lost if the equipment you connect to at AT&T supports PPPoA. Some of it supports PPPoE only and some of it supports PPPoE and PPPoA. If yours does not support PPPoA then set the Netopia back to PPPoE.

.

WAN

Click on ATM.

ATM Circuits

Leave the VPI/VCI setting alone. Change the Encapsulation to PPP over ATM. Change the Multiplexing to VC muxed. Click the Submit button. Click the yellow triangle at the top right then save settings and restart gateway.

You will need to change the MTU on your computer to 1478. If switching to PPPoA does not work for you change the MTU to 1492.

What I have showed you will work for Windows Vista and Windows 7. If you have an older version of Windows then use DrTCP to change the MTU to 1478 and the RWIN (TCP Receive Window) to 64710.

All information in this reply is provided as-is!

If you have trouble please remember that there is a reset button on the back of your Netopia.
