Actiontec GT704WG firmware update - beware

gopcs posted : I believe that the Firmware Update for the ActionTec GT704 modem is defective. I used the file "TDS_GT_Upgrade_1.0.1.8.zip" on two different GT704 modems this weekend, and both are unusable now.

The Update dialog goes very well. The last step instructs the user to disconnect the Black Power Cable from the back of the modem, then reconnect it. I left the computer on this screen for 10 minutes after disconnecting/reconnecting the power cable. The modem lights are: Power=Green, DSL=Green, Ehternet Port 1=Green. All other lights are Off. All attempts of power cycling and holding the Reset button for 1+ minute have no effect. The IP address 192.168.0.1 cannot be reached.

I called TDS support Saturday night and worked with Tim. He concluded the modem is bad now. A new one is being sent at the cost of shipping $14.95. I believe that TDS should absorb the shipping cost because the TDS Update Software caused the problem. Also, the firmware TDS_GT_Upgrade_1.0.1.8.zip should be removed from the TDS web site and repaired.
