| TV Question - M-Card?
Knology's HD-DVR is horrible. I'm looking at buying a Tivo.
I've been searching forums and found some people are getting M-Cards (as opposed to S-Cards) in certain Knology areas.
After several calls to customer service/sales i think the answer is NO they dont have M-Cards in Augusta. Most of the people I spoke with had no idea what i was talking about.
Anyone have experience with cable cards from knology? |

| said by zpm :the dvr-recorder works fine for me Well before I just tell everyone it's horrible I should probably point out my complaints with it: I haven't had any issues with it malfunctioning lately. (Initially recordings would be jumbled with random audio. this was probably related to a "problem at my tap").
Even when the unit is functioning perfectly, the software running on the box looks like something from the 80's. The on screen guide highly pixelated at 480i resolution. There's a very small amount of space for program guide information.
The first time i went to an HD channel and the the onscreen guide went from "full screen" to letter boxed, i laughed out loud a little.
I haven't found anyway to do season pass style recordings. You have to actually find the program on the guide to schedule it to record. (There may be something I'm doing wrong here).
There's very little you can do in the way of customizing, or configuration options. -> all the movie channels that i dont subscribe to still show up there. No way to change order channels.
No 30 second skip?
I probably wouldn't be so hard on this box if i hadn't owned a Dish Network HD DVR and Old series 2 tivos in the past.
After a few calls to Knology its looking like its going to cost about $3.90 extra per month to have a Tivo HD.
Current: $10 HDTV Fee Knology $12.95 DVR Fee Knology
Tivo: $10 HDTV Knology $3.90 Cable Card Fees Knology $12.95 Service Fee Tivo
One other funny thing- when i called to get information they sent me to sales and the rep was constantly trying to sell me on not getting a tivo "it will cost more!", "It's not as good"... When she said "You wont be able to access PPV or On Demand" i lol'd. |

I've had my TIVO awhile now...but as I recall... it had no "Season Pass" .. You had to go and search for the programs to record. The interface looked 20 years out of date.
I'm quite pleased with the integration of Netflix/Amazon/Etc.. IMHO comparing the S/A 8300 to a Tivo is like comparing a corvette to a chevette sure they'll both take you from A to B but.... one makes the ride so much more fun. |

1 edit | said by nightshade74 : The interface looked 20 years out of date. Roger that... The cable guy came by and to deliver the cable card and take back the 8300hd and he was explaining how the k* box was better than the C* box. (He didnt know much about TiVo)
i replied "the hardware itself is probably really good. but the software on it is horrible, and looks like something from the 80s." Then I proceeded to point out a handful of things that are just snotty on the 8300hd.
He was miffed by this whole idea of the 8300hd software being inferior... "so you bought a Tivo, because the menus look better?"
Edit: As far as the cost goes... (Pricing my be diff in diff areas) Apparently the first HD DVR is free/included in the $9.99 HD cost. I was able to get an M-Card so there's 1 - $1.95 fee.
So if you're replacing your single 8300hd with a Tivo you'll end up paying an additional $1.95 for the cable card and the $12.95 for the tivo service.
I was renting 2 8300hd dvrs. The first one is $9.99 per month the second one cost $23 per month ($9.99 HD + $13 DVR). I sent them both back and I'm using basic cable on the second TV. One Tivo is better than two 8300hd's. So my monthly costs are a little less. |
