What happened to the PC security site "PC Flank"?

It was working a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't been able to access it recently. Pinging the site (»pcflank.com) results in 100% packet loss.

It's been down for a couple of months now - possibly more.

Wasn't Randy Bell a moderator on the PCFlank forums? What happened to him? He hasn't been on here for years. Such a knowledgable person.

I think Randy used to hang out at Wilders or Castle Cops after leaving here, possibly some of the vendor specific websites.

But I must admit I haven't run across him myself in years.

Name Game (if he's still about) is another who might know where to find Randy.

That is bad news to the internet community since the site was very useful when it came to content.

I haven't found anything on google.com regarding why the site is history other then the domain is registered until 2013.

I've just searched Wilders (it's years since I was last there) and the user name "Randy Bell" can't be found so he either used another name or wasn't a member.

I hope he's well. He was one of a group of people on here whose opinions and advice I always take heed of.

I'm sure I've seen Name Game on here this year.

Okay, that's a bit of a memory jogger. Think it must have been Castle Cops. Didn't they host a Norton forum for a bit? Still, there was somewhere else he used to hang about, I just can't recall where.

I think Randy and I spent most of our time arguing about NIS and NPF (with varying degrees of civility) back in the old days, but I did used to hear from him thereafter.

Randy also used to hang out at the TrojanHunter forum: »www.misec.net/forum/ I don't know whether he's still there because I haven't visited this forum for many years.

EDIT: I would really like to know how Randy is doing these days. Does anybody know?

Since I used one of their security scanners a couple of weeks ago, the site can't have been down for months.

It was down for me. I'm certain it was a couple of months ago if not more. Perhaps it was a technical problem that was cured a little later.

They certainly could have had a problem a few months ago, fixed it for awhile and then went down again.

As to what the present problem is, I guess they could have a hardware failure, they could be down because of a Denial-of-Service attack, or ??? Checking on Google, I haven't seen anything mentioned regarding what is presently happening.

It seems it was up on the 9th of this month. »209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:10···ank.com/ That link is in Googles cache. »www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3···bs=qdr:y

Perhaps they should have followed their own advice

I've searched for posts made by a member called Randy Bell on there and found nothing.

He was posting on PCFlank in 2007 according to this search. I had to look through several pages before I found that date though.

The last time I saw Randy Bell's name, was at Wilders' Update Alerts forum. But that was at least 3 or 4 years ago. He did get into some heated discussions here on Norton products, and Symantec in general. I hope he's ok. He was a very nice guy. Very helpful.

Hey Randy, if you're still lurking around here, stop to say a quick hello.

Agreed wholeheartedly; even when we argued like cats and dogs, Randy was always a decent guy.

Hi dear Joseph,

Randy is definitely a member at Wilders:
see the thread about the forum staff, scroll down to forum helpers
»www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=249
He was last seen there at 12 Sept 2008.

Randy is also global mod at the TH forum.

I know why he left DSLR.

It has been awhile ago since I had private contact with him.

Cheers, Jan.

Okay, based on that, I would say check with the senior mods at those two forums (preferably privately) and try to locate him.

Well, let me explain why I say do it that way. Over the last decade, I've seen a number of people 'disappear' and some have had medical problems that they don't care to share will the world at large. (And some of them were very dear to me.) If that's the problem here (and I hope it isn't), one of these senior mods is likely to be able to give you some insight and let you know if they'd still like to keep in touch.

I honestly don't know if this is true in Randy's case, but I would suggest you respect his right to privacy if that's what he wishes. Probably best to take these queries offline now, until you can get some more information.

Weren't they based in the Russian Federation?

--------------------------------------

I stopped using them a while ago. Their port scanner gave inconsistent results, but usually indicated that ports such as 139 were open, when I was absolutely sure that they were closed and stealthed BOTH by my router and by software firewalls (different firewalls on different machines).
