Re: What happened to the PC security site "PC Flank"? It's been down for a couple of months now - possibly more.
Wasn't Randy Bell a moderator on the PCFlank forums? What happened to him? He hasn't been on here for years. Such a knowledgable person.

But I must admit I haven't run across him myself in years.
Name Game (if he's still about) is another who might know where to find Randy. -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

I've just searched Wilders (it's years since I was last there) and the user name "Randy Bell" can't be found so he either used another name or wasn't a member.
I hope he's well. He was one of a group of people on here whose opinions and advice I always take heed of.
I'm sure I've seen Name Game on here this year. -- It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall. |

I think Randy and I spent most of our time arguing about NIS and NPF (with varying degrees of civility) back in the old days, but I did used to hear from him thereafter. -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

I'm certain it was a couple of months ago if not more. Perhaps it was a technical problem that was cured a little later. -- It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall. |

 | They certainly could have had a problem a few months ago, fixed it for awhile and then went down again.
As to what the present problem is, I guess they could have a hardware failure, they could be down because of a Denial-of-Service attack, or ??? Checking on Google, I haven't seen anything mentioned regarding what is presently happening. |

Randy is definitely a member at Wilders: see the thread about the forum staff, scroll down to forum helpers »www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=249 He was last seen there at 12 Sept 2008.
Randy is also global mod at the TH forum. Last posting on 8 Feb 2008: »www.misec.net/forum/board/Rulese···02516188
I know why he left DSLR.
It has been awhile ago since I had private contact with him.
Cheers, Jan. |

jvmorrisI Am The Man Who Was Not There.Premium,MVM join:2001-04-03 Reston, VA | Okay, based on that, I would say check with the senior mods at those two forums (preferably privately) and try to locate him.
Well, let me explain why I say do it that way. Over the last decade, I've seen a number of people 'disappear' and some have had medical problems that they don't care to share will the world at large. (And some of them were very dear to me.) If that's the problem here (and I hope it isn't), one of these senior mods is likely to be able to give you some insight and let you know if they'd still like to keep in touch.
I honestly don't know if this is true in Randy's case, but I would suggest you respect his right to privacy if that's what he wishes. Probably best to take these queries offline now, until you can get some more information. -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

Man, I haven't thought about Randy in years! He was a good guy, but I believe he had a beef with the mods here, which is why he hasn't been back in 5 years. Wow, 5 years, if nothing else, that guy has principles. |

mers2Premium,MVM join:2004-03-20 USA kudos:8 | Sounds like the PCFlank site was abandoned and then taken over by malware authors?
Randy willfully left dslr and has been active on Wilders and the Trojan Hunter site as Jrb2 stated. Not sure I'd call quitting and staying away because of a disagreement "principles'. He was a very nice guy, but extremely stubborn and could get quite heated. |

That happened on the At Guard website that was set up to see if the product could be rejuvenated. The effort was abandoned, but the website was left up. Someone has cracked the admin account and it's now used to send out all sorts of crap, some of which most of us definitely do not care to have on our home PCs under any circumstances. -- Regards, Joseph V. Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to mers2 It wasn't a "disagreement" and he didn't leave "willfully" although some thought that was the case.
I do agree though that he could be quite stubborn and had quite a temper some times (but so did I). But other times, he was one of the sweetest guys I've ever known. He and I tended to fight and then makeup and then do it all over again.
He taught me all about how to handle viruses safely and that was a great gift. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

I'm not sure who you were saying that to but I was just wondering about him rather than wanting to contact him.
I remember his posts and I remember him as being a very helpful and knowledgable person (I can't say I remember any of the more heated discussions though) and was curious as to why he disappeared; thankfully it doesn't sound like it was due to ill-health.
If it was his choice to leave then that is fair enough and if he would prefer the reason to be kept quiet I'm certain that those who know will respect his wishes. -- It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall. |
