kudos:1 | Concept is simple The concept is simple and people need to understand that this isn't the movies. When you call 911 it is harder to get your location pinpointed for the 911 service to dispatch personel to your position.
Don't believe me type your address in Google Maps... just the way the system is sometimes it is off sometimes it is right on. OnStar continues to calculate your position in the onboard computer so ti knows exactly where you are. Phones it's not a good enough device yet for 911 to find you.
Eventually we will get it right and will be the best thing since bread but for right now people need to understand that this is still trial and error and not every location will be the same. After we perfect it then there has to be adoption and for a government agency to adopt we all have to wait until they get the money.

kudos:1 | Re: Concept is simple Yeah I would like that too, I think part of the issue is privacy advocates too. Saying it's invasion of privacy to know where you are. I'm sorry my families safety is way more important than the corporation knowing I'm at a mcdonald's

| some counties do have GPS for their 911 centers NOT many do though because of the costly upgrades, blame this on your state and county for not upgranding the systems. The states get the money for 911 but REFUSE to pass it along to the counties, instead to use it to balance the budgets like everything else. | |

Only newer phones have GPS chips. There are still millions of cellphones out there without GPS in them. And all the wireless 911 systems were built before GPS was being added to all new phones.
Eventually we will get were you want, but it takes time. Somehow a lot of people seem to forget that massive nationwide infrastructure changes take time. Too many people today think all change can be done in a few months instead of many years. Blame Apple who pumps out a new iPod or iPhone out every year. | |

GSM providers (at&t, T-Mobile) chose to use cell site triangulation for e911 location info. It is only more recently that GSM phones have started to have GPS hardware in them, starting with high-end phones like PDAs. | |

But does ATT/TM's GSM protocol support the phone uploading GPS data automatically during a 911 call? and does the phone's firmware support it? Reason ATT/TM went with triangulation instead of AGPS was that they would have to ban all foreign non-USA targeted GSM handsets, because foreign handsets with quad band wouldn't have the american AGPS in them. | |

| My crackberry has GPS in it...but it takes it a couple of minutes for it to pick up where it is when you ask it to refresh your location.
Most 911 calls are over in 60 seconds.

Your assuming too much of the average american to know where they are. I've had people in New York City, which is a grid layout, not know where north is, and not know how to use a map what so ever (God's view (Z axis) can't be rotated to land/horizontal view (X, Y axis)). Outside of wonderful number gird new york city, it would be tough for even me, when every 1 mile diameter village has an "Elm Street" and cul-de-sac heaven, or a gird that was never numbered. | |

| Oh please. if you're at your house or a house with an address and you know the name of the street you're on you better and you can speak you can surely give that to the 911 Center.
But what happens if you're out in the middle no nowhere and no landline available only a mobile phone? What are you going to do? die or try getting yourself help?

| Re: Concept is simple just because you don't have access to call out to others doesn't mean 911 WILL NOT work. In many cases thats the only way phones will work out in the wilderness. 911 only...And yah stop with the landline BS.. why promote something thats dead and favor it for your house? For your sake i surely hope you know your address. | |

1 edit | Re: Concept is simple I know my address so did 911 when I called when my grandma was sick... She repeated the address when I called too.
Believe me, if I could get VOIP I would, if we could switch to cell service and know for sure it would worked most of the time I would. It would save us money, but the problem is the technology just isn't reliable enough at this point to totally cut off all landline service.
I know ti is dying service, it just takes time for the other technology to step up to the plate to knock it out of the park.

CDMA phones use AGPS, AGPS just returns the bitstreams of the GPS channels to the tower, the tower then figures out a location based on the bitstream from the cellphone and its own full GPS receiver. | |
