| 169.254 ip address nightmare on vista
Hello, My name is Blake. I'll start off by acknowledging that there may already be a thread on this issue... however, I could not find it if there was. So sorry to bother you again. My problem is that about 4 days ago I did a system restore because things were going wrong with my Laptop. After the restore everything was perfect, with the exception of not being able to connect to the net. At first I figured that it was just the router conflicting with the modem again, so I unplugged both as usual, waited 10 seconds and plugged them back in. with that failing I connected my laptop directly to the modem and it still showed Local Area Connection with Limited Connectivity. After fooling around with the network settings for quite some time I had realized that my IP address now starts with a 169.XX instead of a 192.XX address. So I called my ISP (which is rogers) and they told me to do exactley what I had already done. My computer is already set up to automatically obtain IP. I have also tried ipconfig /release and renew. I have tried everything that I can possibly find on the net. Except get actual tech help... so I'm asking for your help. Oh and I do not have a static IP I have Dynamic one.
Please... I am at my wits end and I have way too many things with nowhere to back them up... so reformatting is out of the question. I don't know if you guys do NETMEETING... but I am even willing to do that! lol!
Thanks in advance, Blake
By the way, here is "route print" and "ipconfig /all":

| You have a null ip.. It seems to be either a driver or hardware issue with your NIC card. My suggestion is to use the USB interface of the modem and "try" and download a updated driver for your NIC. If your router has wireless, connect via WLAN and download the driver.. I hope this helps..
Best of luck |

| reply to DarklyShaven You could always try assigning a static 192.168.x.x address to your network card, and then see if it works or not.
Don't worry about the whole dynamic/static on your Rogers, that only afffects your router, not your laptop.
If your router is 192.168.1.1, set your default gateway to 192.168.1.1. Assign your laptop a random IP in your range from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254. The subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 .
Try this, and then see if you can ping 192.168.1.1 , and if you can get on the net. |

| reply to DarklyShaven You are getting the 169.x.x.x IP address because Vista is not able to communicate with your DHCP server.
So the question is from where is your laptop getting its IP address served?
Provide your chain of equipment [brand, model] -- for example
Roger's Cable Modem [Motorola SB5101] -- your wireless Router [linksys 310N] -- etc.
There is malware that will block Vista from communicating with DHCP and if your system has been infected regardless of which security software you may be using then you may have to go through many hours of system analysis and cleaning assuming that you will want to save important data residing on your hard disk. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

| reply to DarklyShaven Since you are not getting an IP from your router and your modem the problem likely resides with the notebook.
First I would do a complete power cycle, not just a restart of the notebook. I had the same issue after the last couple of Microsoft updates. PC was waiting for a full power down/up, not just a reboot. Could be because I disable IPv6 support and the IPv6/IPv4 tunnel, and block protocol41.
Second, confirm that your network cable is good. These steps may be obvious, but they have fooled many before .
Next, double-check that your network configuration is set to use DHCP, and turn off your firewall. (in case you are blocking port 68)
Next, I would update the NIC drivers, or re-install and run a packet sniffer (Wireshark is good) to see if DHCP requests are being broadcast from the NIC.
As you boot up, (or do a release, then a renew) you should see some DHCP entries like this which will show the NIC looking for a DHCP server, the modem offering an IP, the NIC requesting the IP, and the modem acknowledging the request.
634 707.991986 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 DHCP DHCP Discover - Transaction ID 0x16971b4b
635 708.001850 10.33.134.1 99.238.33.33 DHCP DHCP Offer - Transaction ID 0x16971b4b
636 708.002263 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 DHCP DHCP Request - Transaction ID 0x16971b4b
637 708.068059 10.33.134.1 99.238.33.33 DHCP DHCP ACK - Transaction ID 0x16971b4b

| reply to DarklyShaven Is DHCP running properly on your network? Is anyone else in the house getting this issue? I'll assume you have a router. If you don't have a router, this is a problem your ISP will have to address.
I noticed you had a manually assigned Primary DNS of 192.168.1.1....why is this?
What is happening is that DHCP is failing to give you an address.
If no one else is having issues connecting, then the problem resides on your computer. It could be an adapter issue. Consider connecting by wire and wirelessly. Manually assign an IP address range compatible with your Router ( I will assume 192.168.1.x...where x is any number other than 1 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and gateway pointing to the router). Reset the adapter if needed. Consider unchecking IPv6 just above the IPv6 in the properties of your network adapters. IPv6 is unnecessary and can cause issues with other network connectivity in vista.
If other people are having issues, then double check the DHCP configuration on your router, or reset your router by cycling the power. You may want to consider resetting it back to factory defaults and running the setup utility again.
Ruling that out it could be spyware, corrupted drivers, or failed adapter, especially if plug it into your wired connection or vice versa.

@radiant.net | I have tried everything that's been suggested by everyone else and nothing. What you stated Stewie makes sense... but what do I do about it? |

I have tried everything that's been suggested by everyone else and nothing. What you stated Stewie makes sense... but what do I do about it? Reset everything and start over, that's what I just did. I have four routers.
1) RV082 Main dual wan router 2) WRT160N for wireless behind RV082 DHCP off 3) Speedtouch 585 for DSL in Bridge mode 4) Vonage VDV21 for VoiP DHCP enabled, Port 1 going to Wan 1 of RV082

I have tried everything that's been suggested by everyone else and nothing. Provide a description of your equipment like I requested earlier and also provide how you've connected the chain of equipment -- which cable goes into which port for the gear in question.
Also provide info on your Antivirus Anti-spyware applications -- brand and version. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |
