Garmin GPS Map Updates

Anyone here ever update the maps on their Garmin GPS device ? If so, how often do you update....once a year ???

This is my 1st map update and i chose to go with their "North American Maps Lifetime" update plan. It seems like a pretty good deal, meng.

It was only $120.00, compared to the $69.00 price for a one time map upgrade.

Garmin use to do a map update once a year. Now that they started the lifetime program I think they are update up to 4 times a year.

Key thing is the lifetime updates are locked to the GPS unit.

Personally, I think the lifetime program is a great idea. I also remember when the updates were $75 or $150 based on if you needed City Select or City Navigator.

I know some where I have one of the first Garmin's (GPS V) that supported routable maps.
Ohh, what fun it was trying to created map sets that were 19mb in size and then transfer them over serial.

I've updated mine once, the free one that you get with a new GPS, but I am not subscribing to their plan because I don't think my GPS can handle it. The 2009 map update was too big for my unit, I had to delete a lot of language files to make room. I'm due for a GPS upgrade in a couple years, but it isn't like roads change that much!

Does this work with Garmin XT mobile? Problem is that is tied to the memory card... you can change devices but if you loose the memory card I am not sure how they handle that.

I can't see how it could be tied to a memory card, it is suppose to be tied to the model # and serial #. You'll have to login to your account and select 'map upgrades' to see if you can get the lifetime maps. But their website is confusing. If I click on one link, it'll give me a bunch of options that don't apply.

I had other problems with their website as well. I just bought a Nuvi 780 that came with a free map update. I had two choices, download or pay $10 for a CD. I tried download at first and then when I found out the file was ~2 GB I changed my mine. Between my 5 GB cap at the time and my max connection of 1 Mb, I wasn't going to mess with it. But, there was no way to change your mind. The only option I had was to re-download the map file. I had to get tech support to send me the CD instead.

There is no model XT mobile is for mobile phones: »https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=···&ra=true

The serial # displayed in the software is based on the memory card.

Based on »https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=···oductTab it looks like it is not available.

Reading the FAQ it stated that pre-programed data cards were not covered.

I wish Garmin would get back to work on the Garmin Mobile XT and Mobile PC offerings. I love my GPS 10x plus PDA type device or laptop.

I am still using a 3 year old version of City Navigator (v8) on my 4 yr old Streetpilot. Hasn't caused any problems but obviously newer motels, etc. aren't in there. Haven't felt the need to get more current based on the trips we've taken.

It will be interesting to see how many updates you get over the next couple of years.
