| [Food] Deep dish pizza in NYC?
So I've lived in NYC my entire life and this summer I went to Chicago for the first time ever. I had deep dish pizza while I was there at this place called Giordano's. I had my doubts since I've only experienced NY pizza, but I loved it. I've since wanted to have it again. So I went to a Uno's nearby knowing they had this pizza. But it wasn't the same, not at all.
Just to describe the pizza I had in Giordano's, it was completely backwards. The cheese and sauce was inside the bread. I actually shared a pie with a friend and he had 'toppings' on his pizza while I just had mine regular. And we literally could not see which side was which until the server told us and cut us a piece. It was so weird having to use a fork and knife to eat pizza. But the pizza was something else. I couldn't even finish my half. It had sooo much cheese. It was great.
Now, the deep dish pizza I had at Uno's in NYC had a thick bread crust and you could see the sauce over the cheese. I still had to use a fork and knife to eat, but it wasn't the same at all. It was alright, but nothing I'm dying to eat again.
So my question is where can I find deep dish pizza like the one I experienced in Chicago in NYC? |

It's not the best of Chicago but a noble substitute. |

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure of any places that make good deep dish pizza. I'll ask around here at work. -- Sriram Satish NYU FAS Computing |

| reply to mike31mets Twenty years ago, Uno's Pizzeria was the bomb. Deep dish pizza and a handful of burgers, salads and appetizers was all they served. I went regularly, usually twice a month or so.
Fast forward to today, and now it's "Uno Chicago Grill" with flatbread pizzas, steaks, and a bunch of crap that could have appeared on the menu at Applebee's and you wouldn't know the difference. They still make the classic deep dish pies too, however quality is dependent on the franchise operator. Heck, I've seen Uno signs at NYS Thruway rest stops! -- Don't pay ME back, pay it forward. |

4 edits | Only one Uno that is left in my area is around 7 miles away. The deep dish is still the same but sometimes I can get uncooked fresh pies in the Stop N Shop around the corner. I add some shrimp scampi to them and bake em up nice. |

Keep that as a thing to remind you of the qualities of Chicago. Maybe you will go back. You are not going to get Chicago-quality deep dish pizza here.
And you will not get NYC quality thin crust pizza in Chicago (or anywhere else for that matter). |

Best Italian Everything and not formal but not just a Pizzeria....
»nymag.com/listings/restaurant/do···ain.html
Here is an excerpt from a review.... On a grim block in the Theater District, Don Giovanni's exudes Italian good will. It's life-size, stuff-your-face portions of predictable but satisfying Sunday-dinner classics, the kind Tony Soprano eats in his dining room: spaghetti and meatballs, stuffed shells, and chicken parmigiana. In the dining room lined with white Christmas lights and opera photos in faux-Victorian gilt frames are bargain-hunting elderly couples, tired tourist families, and the bridge-and-tunnel set in for dinner and a show. Brick-oven pies are distinguished by their thin crustsa winning balance because they're crisp around the edges and bready under the cheese. The sweet red sauce is mild and simple. Skip the Mozzarella Caprese and opt instead for the simple Crostini, which come smothered in a zesty pesto sauce or ripe tomatoes piquantly dressed. The pesto gnocchi have an appropriately chewy texture, and are served in tangy sauce rendered thick by pine nuts. The popular veal parmigiana is herb-flecked veal is lightly fried in a garlicky breadcrumb crust. |

I was there last night and it is a very reasonably priced spot in Manhattan - I had their version of deepdish about a year ago so I can't imagine it went downhill. What I DID notice was they cut their prices since last year, probably to adjust to the "recovering economy".
I also think they have another location in Manhattan but I have never been there. If you look at the menu I linked to, most of the prices yesterday were at least a dollar or two LESS than what is posted.
Their spider-bite souffle is to die for!! |

| reply to mike31mets As a Chicagoan who dropped into Queens 5 years ago, I figure I should pop into this thread
I do love (and miss) good Chicago deep dish, and haven't found any in NYC yet. Of course I did try Uno's (one in Forest Hills, I think - and another in Astoria), but they don't do it for me. Actually they didn't really do it for me in Chicago either. My preference is for Giordano's and Pizza Capri. Gino's used to be great too...
Anyway, I try to get deep dish whenever I'm back in Chicago for a visit. And when I do, I almost always smuggle a pie back on the plane. Just get it fully cooked on the way to the airport, wrap it well in foil and plastic, and make sure you've got carry-on space! You do get strange comments from the x-ray scanner guys though...
Sorry - I've got no other answer on where to get the good stuff locally! btw - my favorite thin crust comes from Aurelios in Homewood IL (Chicago south 'burb). They don't sell slices, and the full pies are cut in square-shaped slices, but it's the best pizza I've ever had... |
