Plus fees. What is it. over $30?
Canada is as far as I call
and everybody but VoicePulse includes Canada.

If you really call other countries,
it sounds great for an all you can eat plan.

For me VOIPo does the trick.

Could somebody who has Vonage in Texas for example tell me what all the fees, taxes, etc. add up to. I would really appreciate it.

I am frankly surprised that countries like Romania and Bulgaria are included. I might be interested but I need to put the total cost against a 'pay as you go' plan with Callcentric for example. It is hard for me to see if Vonage is more cost effective because $24.99 is NOT the final price per month unfortunately.

If you enter your ZIP code on the Vonage website under "Calculate startup costs" you can see the initial and ongoing monthly total.

I entered a random Houston ZIP code and came up with:
Monthly Service Charge $24.99
FUSF (VoIP) $2.41
State/Local Taxes and Fees $1.90
Regulatory and Compliance Fee $1.49
Emergency 911 Service Fee $1.49
E911 $0.50
Total $32.78

They are currently waiving all activation/equipment fees, but you have a 12 month commitment.

Another thing to consider is that their rates to call international destinations NOT in the plan (including mobile phones in Europe, for example) are more expensive than many other providers.

Hi,

Your total bill will be around $33.00 every month no matter how much your talk.

You have to have a 1 year agreement. $396

Fine print indicates you will pay extra fees to cell calls to most of those 60 countries.

A pay as you go, bring your own device plan that charges you .02 to the places you say you call U.S. and CA will give you 1650 minutes for your $33. Most PAYG plans carry over the balance not used to the next month. Depending on your calling habits this might be a better deal in the long run.

Kind Regards,

Les

Good link and thank you. Currently I have Lingo and the total is around $30 but Lingo does not include Romania which we do call but using another company via an 800 number (around 3.5 cents a minute). We also call Spain from time to time.

Callcentric pay as you go offer is also attractive. Some of the unknowns of Vonage vs. Callcentric are:

1) International call quality/reliability.
2) What kind of taxes/fess does Callcentric have on their pay as you go plans.

Please clarify how you got the $396 number. I don't believe your statement is accurate.

In addition to CallCentric PAYG there is also CallCentric World Select:

With regard to your question, CallCentric collects NY State sales tax ONLY if you are in NY State. There is also a 911 fee of $ 1.50 per month. No other fees.

Unlike some other companies, no junk fees like USF or such.

Some InPhonex plans may be useful for some customers:

Hum. After hearing the news I changed my unlimited US and Canada calling plan to the 60 country world plan. Same price, same original features, but far better.

Hi,

What Vonage quotes you is not the total price you will be paying at the end of the month. The actual total price per month is going to be about $33. 12 X 33 = 396.

See soitgoes2 post for a detailed itemized list.

Now that is going to be the minimum you are going to pay.

The stat guys at Vonage know a good percentage of signup are not going to use the total call time they are calculating that price on. The also know a good percentage of sign ups are going to have extra fees for cell phone usage.

Just my 2 cents.

Kind Regards,

Les

Where does this come from? If someone cancels after, say, 3 months, what is the total spend?

Right. The total price varies by location, but all locations are billed:
Monthly Service Charge $24.99
FUSF (VoIP) $2.41
Regulatory and Compliance Fee $1.49
Emergency 911 Service Fee $1.49
SUBTOTAL $30.38

Those are all Vonage fees (the USF is a Vonage fee because the amount varies by carrier and it is the carrier that has the obligation to pay it, not the end user). Then, based on location, you may have sales taxes and local 911 fees.

There's both a Disconnection Fee and a Recovery Fee if you cancel:
8.7 Disconnection Fee (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers).
You will be charged a disconnection fee of $39.99 per voice line if your service is disconnected, subject to state and local laws. However, the disconnection fee may be waived according to the following:
1) If your subscription date is on or before January 31, 2007 and your service is disconnected after 1 year following your subscription date, the disconnection fee is waived; or
2) If your subscription date is on or between February 1, 2007 and before May 29, 2009, and your service is disconnected after 2 years following your subscription date, the disconnection fee is waived; or
3) If your subscription date is on or after May 29, 2009, and your service is disconnected after 1 year following your subscription date, the disconnection fee is waived.

8.8 Recovery Fee.
If you disconnect service based on a commitment before the end of the commitment period, you agree to pay us the applicable recovery fee. A recovery fee is equal to the difference between the price you paid and the regular price of the good, service, or other benefit you received. Any recovery fees are cumulative and are in addition to any other amounts you may owe us, including any disconnection fees.

†RATES EXCLUDE: HIGH SPEED INTERNET SERVICE. OTHER FEES APPLY. DEVICE MAY BE REFURBISHED. A DISCONNECTION FEE OF $39.99 WILL APPLY FOR CANCELLATION BEFORE 1 YEAR. DISCONNECTION AND OTHER FEES REFUNDED FOR CUSTOMERS THAT QUALIFY FOR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. SEE DETAILS. YOUR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE PERIOD AND BILLING START ON THE DATE OF YOUR ORDER. IF YOU CANCEL WITHIN THE MONEY BACK GUARANTEE PERIOD, YOU MUST RETURN THE DEVICE. IF YOU CANCEL AFTER THE MONEY BACK GUARANTEE PERIOD AND WITHIN 1 YEAR OF YOUR ORDER DATE, YOU WILL BE CHARGED A REBATE RECOVERY FEE EQUAL TO THE AMOUNT OF THE REBATE INITIALLY GIVEN TO YOU FOR THE EQUIPMENT.
Vonage apparently values the "free" adapter at $79.99 (V-Portal Phone Adapter ($79.99 Value)), so I believe an early cancellation would be charged $39.99 + $79.99 + any applicable taxes.

Total spend for three months and cancellation would therefore be about $220.

Hi,

Again soitgoes2 has an itemized breakdown of the cost.

When I was with Vonage my bill was $32.49 plus long distant fees of about $100 a month. That was still better than the $50 plus base price and $200 a month long distance I was paying with Verizon for the same calls.

My point was not an opinion about Vonage but more about how prices are stated vs. the actual price you will be paying at the end of the month. You really have to read the fine print and calculate your monthly rate based on your actual calling habits to determine if the deal is right for you.

Kind Regards,

Les

$33 a month is a joke even for a world plan. You have to make a ton of US + International calls to break even for that price.

I have Callcentric's pay per min plan. Even after monthly and 911 fees my wife would need to make a hell of a lot of calls to China , Thailand, and US to reach that $33 mark

This is a good point centric that you bring up. I need to consider the $33/month with Vonage vs the low per minute rates from Callcentric for Romania and Spain.

Also another good point that PX Eliezer brings up is that if you live outside NY then the fess/taxes you pay with Callcentric is quite low (less than $2 looks like).

Its a joke for you since you don't make international calls.

I think this is an excellent move by Vonage that will under-cut other VOIP providers(like Callcentric, F-9 etc)

We make about 1500 min worth of calls to India and am paying 0.05cents/min..do the math.

I can't sign up for Vonage since I just bought Ooma but the Vonage plan is no joke for sure.

Right...it's a good deal for certain customers with certain calling patterns.

If you really make 1500 minutes of calls to India each month, though, why don't you sign up for Vonage even if you've already bought Ooma?

You say you pay 5cpm for those calls.
Ooma charges 8.5cpm for calls to India; Future Nine charges 3.4cpm to India. Callwithus charges 2.325cpm to India.

Even if you only use Vonage for your India calls, it's still cheaper.

You could even sell your Ooma device.

wow. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. I was actually planning to sign up with a different carrier, but vonage sounds like a good deal. just 25 a month huh? hmm. But the only country outside of US that I would be calling to is Canada region, but I guess signing up with their plan won't be such a bad idea when they cover so many countries!
