[Connectivity] Comcast/Aol website issues?I am in the Chicage (suburbs) area. For the past week, I suddenly lose access to all aol websites. www.aol.com www.games.com www.tmz.com netscape.aol.com www.mapquest.com Sometimes pings time out immediately. Others go a few hops and time out as soon as they try to access any aol site. I've gone through all the usual...dumping cache, cookies, temp. files. Reboot modem, router, etc. I just had a chat with Comcast online. When they tried to access these websites, they received the same response. I was told the websites are all down. I told them they "appear" to be down to us, but they work through www.proxify.com so they are not down. Then I was told that maybe aol is blocking my i.p. Of course she had no explanation for why HER connection was blocked. Any suggestions from anyone here? Even though I can access these sites through a proxy, I am not able to "use" them since I have to log-in to most of them. Any help is appreciated. |

Can you post a trace to a non AOL site for comparison? It looks like you have some other issues going on. |

Here's a trace to this website. Thanks. |

You have some serious connection problems going on. Lets start here: » Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ » How To Get Help! |

Beachin, Having a heck of a time becoming pingable. Set my router to allow anonymous connections, and dsl reports stops saying I'm unpingable, but when line quality test came back, it said it wasn't able to ping me. Upload speed varies from .499 to 1.0 mbps |

Signals aren't really out of spec(borderline), but something is causing a ton of latency on your connection. You may not be hurt by having a tech come out and check everything / change out the modem.
Have you scanned your computer for malware/spyware/viruses recently? Something could also be eating up your connection. |

Beachin, thanks for your help. I use the McAfee Firewall/Viruscan available through Comcast. I also run AdAware and Spybot. Haven't found a thing. I have a wireless network, and my kids are signed on their laptops right now. ..so they may be dragging down the connection. (Network is secured and I can see all connections.) It doesn't see to affect the aol websites problem. ( I did a clean reboot of everything when I was the only one on this morning.) Like I said earlier, some days it will work, then drop dead for 24 hours, then magically reappear. I'll give it a few more days before I call for a Tech. Thanks again. |

Ahh a router - try plugging your computer directly in (reboot the modem too by unplugging it for 30 sec) and running the tests again.
I don't know why I missed that. Forgot my coffee today I guess. |

Beachin, will do. (Tried it yesterday with direct modem to pc and still no access to those websites, but will redo.) |

Beachin, I need coffee too. Was back and doing the tests when I saw your update. Rebooted and removed the modem battery. My results... |

much much better - Either your router is causing you latency issues or another computer on your network is. Don't forget, as long as a machine is on it can be producing traffic. AOL may have it's own problems, but you have some going on locally as well.
Your upstream signal is creeping up to being out range as well. If you see any issues you may need a tech visit. |

ComTech4, I noticed when I tracert www.aol.com I get an ip of 205.188.142.182 You were given an ip of:207.200.94.38 They use different traceroutes. When I try 207.200.94.38 my tracert looks like yours. It goes to 172.17.66.190 and times out at that hop.
Scratch, that...when I pinged aol I was given yet another ip! Who knows what's going on with them. |

Thanks Beachin.
I may look into a new router. My younger kids use an older pc with Windows XP and a wireless USB adapter. Could be that one dragging the connection down. They're all back to school in a few days. I will be able to shut everything down, and troubleshoot my pc and router with each of the other computers. Will get a better idea where the problem comes in. |

Beachin...if you see this, my aol websites are magically working again. (Gone for almost exactly 24 hours.) I have done nothing new since I did the last set of tests you asked for. |

AOL has multiple hosts, and which is used will depend upon their load balancing algorithm: 08/21/09 14:29:53 dns aol.com
Mail for aol.com is handled by mailin-02.mx.aol.com mailin-01.mx.aol.com mailin-04.mx.aol.com mailin-03.mx.aol.com

64.12.50.151
64.12.193.85

This isn't uncommon with the larger providers, even Comcast: 08/21/09 14:31:33 dns comcast.net
Mail for comcast.net is handled by mx1a.comcast.net mx2.comcast.net mx1.comcast.net mx4.comcast.net mx2b.comcast.net mx2a.comcast.net mx3.comcast.net mx1b.comcast.net
