Switched to 12 Meg, upload provisioning wrong?Getting good download (12640 kbps) but upload is 448 kbps. Check DSL stats (see below) and all look ok except for upload provisioning. Seems incorrect to me, called WS customer service they are looking into it. Will check again later today as I was just upgraded to 12 Mbps service today.

It could be a provisioning problemn but that seems like a strange rate to pick, You could try sending a PM to the user Windstream here with your DSL phone number and Username and he could check but the other possibility is low upstream SNR, unfortunately the 5200/4200 doesn't show this information but again Windstream should be able to check. Edit: Added Links for Windstream |

Hi Napsterblaster,
Thanks for the response, have not been on this forum lately, good to see that Windstream is now here. Have sent an email with the info you stated and referencing this thread to;
wci.broadbandhelp@windstream.com
regards
Update, just checked and now have;
DSL Status Status ATU-C Current Tx Rate (bits/sec) ATU-R Current Tx Rate (bits/sec) UP 14973000 539000
what is going on? |

Hello kringles, taking a look at the information you sent and working with our engineers on it now. |

Hi Windstream, thanks for the quick response.
PS; what should the upstream value be assuming line is configured for standard (upstream=768 kbps?) 12 mbps line?
PPS; just checked again the download is the same but upload has been changed to 491000. |

said by kringles:...what should the upstream value be assuming line is configured for standard (upstream=768 kbps?) 12 mbps line? kringles - You should be fairly close the to the 768 rate. You current download/upload is listed below. 14973/14976kbps SNR:14db Signal Up:491/768kbps SNR:7db I apologize for the delay in getting this posted, however you are setup correctly in the network. We created a ticket for a technician to come out and try and and resolve the issue for you. |

@Windstream,
No apology necessary, tech came by today, on Saturday! After considerable troublshooting problem was isolated to a problematic/faulty Eaton SurgTel protector on the incoming phone/DSL lines. apparently download was not affected but upload definately was. System had been this way for a while but the previous 6meg/384kbps service was not affected. Bypassing this surge protector led to the following results(note only have been running a few minutes);
DSL Status/Statistics
DSL Status Status ATU-C Current Tx Rate (bits/sec) ATU-R Current Tx Rate (bits/sec) UP 14973000 767000
DSL Statistics (accumulated at 15 minute intervals) System Time Tx CRC Tx FEC Rx CRC Rx FEC LOS SEF LOS (sec) SEF (sec) Err (sec) Rx (blocks) Tx (blocks) SNR Atten. 08-22-2009 21:18:01GMT 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 18101 18102 20.0 4.5 08-22-2009 21:12:55GMT 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 53262 53262 20.0 4.5 Totals 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 71363 71364 N/A N/A
Speakeasy speed test results; 12,797 Down, 656 Up.
Kudos to you and the support personnel at Windstream, I wish I could get outstanding service like this everywhere. Upgrade was ordered on 8/19, installed 8/21 and problem corrected on 8/22. That is almost as fast as my DSL now!
Thanks & Best Regards kringles |

I had a feeling it was the Upstream SNR I wish the Speedstreams had some of the diagnostic info my D-Link has.
anyway glad you got it fixed. |

Found a Netgear DG834 Ver2 DSL Modem/Firewall/4 Port Router in my spare parts box and plugged it in place of the Windstream supplied SS4200. It does not show the same statistics as the SS4200 but does show upstream SNR & Attenuation. Here are the results;
System Up Time 01:51:55 Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time WAN PPPoE 39859 66597 0 486 12359 01:51:26 LAN 10M/100M 71022 52231 0 12768 1086 01:51:50
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 14973 kbps 767 kbps Line Attenuation 4 db 0 db Noise Margin 20 db 16 db
The downstream SNR has been a solid 18-20.
I found a program called 'Routerstats" on the internet that interfaces with the Netgear and allows statistics to be gathered and plotted. I will give it a try and post results here in a day or two. |

Looks like the DSLAM is not giving your modem the upstream SNR info (showing 0, some dont for what ever reason), humm that Routerstats program looks interesting I think I might try it. Just to give an idea of the stats availble on some modems heres my DSL Stats page from my D-Link DSL-2540B,
and my ATM Stats Page.

It appears based on the data kringles supplied:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 14973 kbps 767 kbps Line Attenuation 4 db 0 db Noise Margin 20 db 16 db
Here are the SNR readings:
Downstream SNR: 20dB Downstream Atten: 4dB Upstream SNR: 16dB Upstream Atten: 0dB |

After Surge protector removed |
Here is an actual plot from Routerstats. Note the 'outages' were due to some rearranging of router and were not due to ISP. Here is a link to this free program; » www.vwlowen.co.uk/intern ··· iles.htmIt was primarily designed to work with certain Netgear routers but has been adapted to some others. I see that a D-Link model (not your D-Link DSL-2540B) is listed. Maybe you can get it to work, it appears to have a lot of useful features. |

I did get it to work, looks like you could get it to work with almost any router with stats available via a web page you might just have to tweak it (I only had to the the location of the stats page and "Pick" the numbers associated with each value).
Again nice find. |
