I am not sure, but I can confirm TD-8816 is. Modem wise, I don't think they have big difference. |

i run two of these modems and i like them. they give me higher stats on my downstream (5-6db) than the 2wire and speedstreams i have but a little less on the upstream (3-4db)
they don't have any usuable stats page that i have found but it does tell you what your line rate is. |

TD 8816 is much better, if you really want a cheap modem.
If there never are any problems, 8610/8616 will probably be fine, but it will not help you diagnose problems if there are any.
* * *
My personal recommendation, considering all the various failure modes of DSL setups, is the ST 546.
When things go wrong, it will give you access to the critical information quickly, easily, and despite the most common problems.
While I have helped many people access their modem via their Tomato Router, I know that there are times when the PC has its own problems that cause it to fail in this. Such computer problems often appear exactly when there are other, DSL or PPP problems. The ST 546 makes possible a hardware connection to the modem without disconnecting the router, and can thus help in diagnosing problem(s) with live connections. The ST 5x6 logs all DSL events and can help isolate problems between DSl, PPP, and other sources, such as PC or distant servers. |

yes the 8816 is a modem/router combo. it's also very good and has multiple pages of statistics/data you can access to trouble shoot problematic lines with. if you have a solid line without any issues of sync loss the 8616 will be fine however the 8816 does have the extra data for troubleshooting. i believe they use the same chipset on each for performance should be the same. Canada computers sells both these modems and are rather inexpensive. » canadacomputers.com/inde ··· =NTW.896» canadacomputers.com/inde ··· =NTW.896 |

Just Scan Thru the Manual of 8816. Most of pages are about the part of Router that I don't need. So I think I will go for 8616. I can get it under $20. Look like A pure ADSL modem fit me more... For router function, I leave it for my Tomato Router.

Hi Talon, I just bought TD8616 but I can't get into the PPPoE. Were you able to configure the modem by its original firmware? or you updated it? Thanks in advance |

The TD-8616 is simply a modem. You will have to manage your PPPoE connection from a router or from a computer. The TD8816 can handle PPPoE. |

Anyone can point me at a 'DMT' capture for this brand/model? |

|
|
An 'OrbMT' capture will do, please just refresh my memory... |

I just got the 8816 on hand today. It's a pure Modem that use as Bridge mode & thats what I need.
For Bridge Mode Modem. You need to use your router or computer to do PPPoE Login.
I will post a bit more after I back home...!

I am using my 2nd TD-8816 now, my first one was fried by a lightning shock, so was my WRT54GL. The first one is hardware ver 1 and this one is ver 3. I feel the new one is a little bit warmer than the old one, or because of the season? Both are very stable. |

My one just a bit warm close to cool. Don't know if it will turn hotter when Download at full load....

I've been running my 8816 for about a year now with no hiccups. Paid $29 for it too, from canada computers I think.

Don't just look at that page, click away and you will see they use different versions of firmware, which is hardware version specified. So I guess they are different in deed. |
