deleting pictures and making copies

In "My Pictures" I cannot delete pictures in X P.
If I delete a picture, more copies get made called "copy(1) of.., copy(2)of..", and so on. The My Pictures folder is getting bigger and bigger, it's filled with 100s of pictures, most have many copys from me trying to delete them. The copies of pictures just keeps multiplying.
Please help - this is driving me bananas !!!!!!!
I high light the picture and right click delete and it asks me if I would like to send it to the recycle bin and I click yes and it multiples........time and time again.
I used avast did a full system scan, no virus was found. What's happened? Please help

Try selecting a file or two and use shift-delete.

Try viewing them in the detail mode rather than thumbnail and then delete them. Do not use a photo program to delete them. Some them have settings that automatically save pictures if you edit them.
