[split]NIM-100 configuration

In a post here, »Re: Will this NIM100-like device work?
said by More Fiber:

I believe there is a similar screen in the NIM-100.
•Connect a PC directly to the NIM-100.
•Do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE and /RENEW on the PC. The PC should assign itself a 169.254.1.x address.
•Browse to »169.254.1.1 You should be presented with the NIM-100 login screen. The password is "entropic" (without quotes).
•Go to the STATUS screen.
•Click on GET LINK STATUS.

I'm not sure it works like that. At least I'll tell you what I get.

Actiontec is primary with ethernet WAN, STB-1 is connected to coax, NIM is connected to coax.

Starting with all three connected as described and running. NIM is idle with nothing connected to its ethernet. PC is running ubuntu, and I ended up with two network connections. One is Auto Eth1 DHCP, and the other one is StaticNim Eth1 with 169.254.1.20/255.255.255.0/169.254.1.1 also with 10.0.0.1,10.0.0.2 DNS. I don't think DNS matters because all browsing is by IP address.

Release/renew, as stated in More Fiber's step-by-step, when the NIM100 is connected with Actiontec delivering DHCP services will give a 192.168 address.

So then I created the static 169.254 connection. Even so, with NIC status showing connected, could not connect to the gateway. So I turned off the Actiontec. Still no go. Also had to turn off the STB (well, I actually disconnected NIM from coax).

Only then was I able to log in with only NIM-100 and PC powered. Screen shots below.

When I was connected and viewing the NIM Status page, I connected the coax. The status page went into refresh but I lost the NIM gateway connection.

I believe the setup page allows me to login by changing configuration, but I will study that further at a later date. Will update this topic later, which is why I split this out from the previous discussion.

See updated posts in the original thread regarding connecting to a NIM, when there are other NIMs or a DHCP server on the coax.
