reply to FastiBook

Re: Problems? - I installed it, and it actually works.

Fastibook, I hear you.
I've had FiOS (triple play) since Dec '07, and until last week had no problems at all. In all of that time, I haven't wasted a single minute calling their support line. Oh, and my bills have always been correct. So take this with a grain of salt because I have no axe to grind.

I have to give them credit. This is the first provider software I've seen that actually does something interesting. It fixes problems that are outside of my home.

Ok, so last week my DVR suddenly got stupid and wouldn't show some of my premium channels. All of my other boxes were fine. I did the standard routine that I would run through every other week before calling ***crap when I used them for cable service.

Coax tight - check
Unplugged the box to restart it - check

No joy...

For a second, it looked like I was going to have to make my first call to support. However, I had downloaded this program from the verizon forums a few weeks ago to check it out. Most of the "help" in this application is too basic to be of any use for me; but I remembered that there was this one area that showed my actual boxes, and a link called "auto-fix". This is probably the only reason that I didn't uninstall it.

So I fired up this program and clicked on the automatic fix for set top boxes. Then I picked my DVR. It did something, and a few seconds later my DVR reset. At first I thought I had just wasted my time repeating what I'd already done; but lo and behold, when it came back up, everything was working. So the streak is intact. In almost two years, my only contact with verizon has been when my paper bill arrives in the mail.

This program actually works. If I hadn't installed it, I'd probably still be on hold waiting for a rep now. (Since I haven't called, I have no idea how long it really takes to get through to support for FiOS; but that's how I feel when I call any company for support.)

So let the beating begin. I think they are on to something here, and I am going to keep this installed. My machine isn't screwed up, and this program only runs when I run it. I don't know what I might need to do with them next; but if they have a way for me to do it without picking up my phone, and it is in this application, I'm going to give it a try. Whether this turns out to be helpful in other ways is up to them I guess.

Now, where did I put that body armour?
