1 edit | Why is my MacBook getting 16mbps, PCs only 8mbps?
Hi all,
I'm having an odd issue with my home network. I have Comcast HSI 16/2 tier service with a Motorola SB5120 modem and a D-Link DGL-4500 router. I'm getting the full 16mbps on my MacBook (running OSX 10.5) but only 8mbps on my Windows XP and Windows 7 machines.
My tweak test results are clean, my RWIN (in XP) is calculated and set for my downstream speed, and I'm getting an excellent Wi-Fi signal level on all of the machines. Real world download speeds on the PCs are 1MB/s and on the Mac are 2MB/sec. I'm testing each machine when absolutely no other device is accessing the network.
Any ideas on why the Windows boxes are seeing 1/2 the downstream?
Thanks! -- Regards,

3 edits | reply to MrPenguin Because that Mac OSX uses freebsd unix mod inside of mac osx that you seeing that much speeds on mac osx than windows that is due unix TCP is much more robust than windows TCP.
Windows aren't only for PCs however there are Linux for the PCs available does that are much faster speeds than windows over the broadband in the fact.
Unless if that your router is really supports TCP window scaling then your router does allows your both two windows boxes and mac box to use TCP window scale option set. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. |

Where I do see slowdowns in speed tests is when I'm using Avast! antivirus. It "slows down" the speed test for some reason. |

| Well, don't running Avast! antivirus, by doing of running any antivirus program that may will impact the performance of an internet. and if you have antivirus running in the background then you may want to use renice command to set your antivirus program in the background at 15 level priority that will set your antivirus program be lower in the processing and other everything else includes accessing to the internet should be fine working. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. |

1 edit | Thanks. I don't see many people talk about TCP performance from one operating system to another. Very interesting topic!
Programs affecting internet performance is on-topic. Didn't MS use the FreeBSD TCP/IP stack ? I've heard of MS restricting how many internet connections you can have, etc., and got tired of that and moved on to Linux and FreeBSD (PC-BSD). It's nice to be able to let a modern computer take advantage of its capabilities instead of letting a software company decide what I can or cannot do.

1 edit | I see. that good you made decision of move into Linux to obtain of gaining the knowledge of technology where you can take advantage of Linux which that doesn't restricted you from something what suits to your needs that called the open source code that C,C++ and other programming files are scatters over been availability on mostly Linux distro boxes but most maintain package managers in mostly Linux distros usually takes care of files where they are on. However you really can tweak TCP slack transport over IP network that is yours to do with it because that doesn't restricted you from something of freedom so you have freedom to do what you want -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. |
