Laws did what they were supposed to - give more competition

These state laws did what they purported to do - make competition available sooner by streamlining the franchise approval process.

And TV rates are what they are because Hollywood controls the costs to ALL cable & telco providers. They set a base cost that affects all TV rates.

having one cable company and one telco to choose from doesn't seem to be living up to the idea of "competition". it certainly doesn't seem to bring the benefits of competition - lower prices, better selection, etc.

mostly the laws appear to do what Karl pointed out:result in fewer legal obligations on the carriers and less protection for consumers.

real competition as a result of these franchise changes appears to be a pipe dream or at best, something that might happen in the future.

I'd change that word consumers to "local graft seeking politicians" and then I'd agree.

While this is true to some extent, it's not the complete picture. There are stockholders to please, which is why you typically see private companies (like my ILEC) offer service significantly cheaper even though their economies of scale (read: negotiating power) is substantially less.

Don't forget sports programming providers.

Subscribers are forced to take sports channels, and we are forced to pay for them despite the fact that a lot of people don't watch them and they are among the most expensive channels per subscriber.

I'm not going to stand up for cable providers, but when you're told you have to carry all our channels or none, well you're over the barrel.

While Hollywood shoulders a great deal of the blame, don't forget the 21st century opiate of the masses, sports programing.

I almost never watch sports programing at home. I'll admit I enjoy watching the Phillies play (I was a fan when they sucked, so all you pointing the bandwagon finger can beat it), but I either go out to watch, or go to the game.

Of course you'd be wrong, but hey, as long as you're happy living in the Land of Denial.
