| Go farther up the chain Cable/Telco are just the middleman between networks and consumers.
TV costs will drop when programming costs do. If you really want to point fingers for high TV prices, point them at Disney (ESPN, sports programming) and Viacom (MTV/Nickeloedon, kids programming).

| Re: Go farther up the chain Programming costs aren't in play here. We're talking about ATT and VZ promising to lower rates and in return have raised rates several TIMES EACH in the last few years.
They always say about how they'd lower rates and how they're service is better when it's actually MORE.

| Re: Go farther up the chain Programming costs are only part of the issue.
Phone company lobbyists shouldn't have promised lower prices for TV, knowing broadcasters continually hike prices on them. hikes which carriers never have to eat themselves.
The real issue is that these lobbyists used these bogus prices of false TV price reductions to convince state legislators they should be getting all these additional legislative perks, like the elimination of all manner of consumer protections (which ones got killed vary from state to state)....

No provider has any leverage with the programmers. One provider always seems to give in to the programmers' ridiculous demands, uses it to snag new business...then the other provider caves in so they stop losing customers...and shortly thereafter all the consumers see a rate increase. If there were only one provider here in Central Ohio, I'd wager the Big10 network NEVER would have seen the ~$1/subscriber they ended up getting.
The competition that IS needed is with the programmers themselves. Why don I need cable just to get Monday night football? Why can't I pay to watch it elsewhere? Maybe the FCC should look into those exclusive agreements instead of why they can't get a Verizon iphone.

| Re: Go farther up the chain TWC did NOT give Big10 $1.00 It wasn't even close.
TWC MidOhio fought long and hard for that. Many cable providers released they actually paid ~.25 for that channel EVEN in a Big10 state. Buckeye Cable was one.
And if you wanna watch football, go to hhgregg and watch in their stores tell them you want to watch CH. 107 on the LGs they'll turn it on.

Or was it reduced costs regardless of the incumbent providers' rate increases? If it's the latter, then I would think it very challenging for anyone to truly expect that outcome....even lawmakers.
As for using $$ as a cover to reduce "consumer protections", is anyone honestly surprised? The state legislators should be capable of reading and they should have been intelligent enough to understand the laws that they voted to approve....if their constituents were really concerned, and they were willing to accept those concerns.

| | So what you are saying is that the margins for markup are so slim that they can't compete on pricing?
Not buying it. | |
